PETE PEETERS
Goaltending Coach

A native Edmontonian, Pete Peeters begins his seventh season as the Oilers’ goaltending coach. One of the premier goaltenders during a 13-season NHL career that saw him tend the twine for three teams from 1978-79 to 1990-91, Peeters is responsible for working with the Edmonton goaltenders at all levels of the organization – from draft choices to the NHL.

Selected by Philadelphia in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft, the 50-year-old made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 1978-79, appearing in five games. In his first full season in the NHL, Peeters put together a remarkable 29-5-5 record, helping the Flyers to a 35-game undefeated streak, the longest in NHL history. He helped backstop Philadelphia to the 1980 Stanley Cup Final that season, but the Flyers fell in six games to the New York Islanders.

After two more 20-win seasons as a Flyer, Peeters was traded to Boston for Brad McCrimmon on June 9, 1982 and in his first season with the Bruins he led the NHL with 40 wins and was the Vezina Trophy winner with a league-leading 2.36 GAA and eight shutouts. He finished second in voting for the Hart Trophy behind only Wayne Gretzky and was named to the NHL’s first all-star team.

Peeters was a member of Team Canada in the 1984 Canada Cup and was 3-1-0 with a 3.33 GAA in four games as backstopped Canada to the gold medal. One of his most memorable moments came in the semi-final when he was outstanding in a 3-2 victory over the Soviet Union.

He played in 489 career games during his 13 NHL seasons with Philadelphia, Boston and the Washington Capitals, registering a 3.08 GAA, 21 shutouts and a career record of 246-155-51.  Peeters was 35-35 with a 3.31 GAA in 71 playoff games and he skated in four NHL All-Star Games (1980, 1981, 1983, 1984).
