Nail Yakupov scored the game-winner with a power-play goal 3:52 into overtime, while Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves as the Edmonton Oilers kicked off a three-game road trip with a 2-1 overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes at Arena.

Both the Oilers and Coyotes had an equal number of shots in the early going, but after a dominant, minute-long shift near the five-minute mark, the visitors secured a 1-0 lead. Ryan Smyth's patented wraparound try was stopped by the paddle of Chad Johnson, but Lennart Petrell muscled his way into the slot and pounced on the fortuitous rebound, scoring his first goal of the season.

Sam Gagner, who picked up an assist on the Petrell goal (extending his poing streak to six games in the process), was then assessed a slashing minor at 5:12. Allowing only a single shot on goal, the Oilers killed it off with ease.

Just as the 10-minute mark passed, Devan Dubnyk was called upon to make a big save. Radim Vrbata burst down the wing and snapped a shot, but the netminder sucked it in with a sponge-like left pad save. Phoenix's Alexandre Bolduc crashed the crease a little too hard after the whistle and was promptly sent off for slashing.

Much like the Coyotes' earlier attempt, the Oilers generated little with the man-advantage and the 1-0 game continued.

The Oilers went right back at it with 4:54 to play as Derek Morris was called for hooking. Without a shot to speak of, the League's best power-play dropped to an 0-for-2 success rate on the night.

With 20 minutes in the books, the Oilers led 1-0 but trailed 10-8 on the shot clock.

Nail Yakupov was nearly sprung on a breakaway as he chased down a loose puck inside the Coyotes blue line three minutes in, but Johnson raced out to meet him and cleared the puck to safety.

As the 10-minute mark approached, the Coyotes nearly buried the equalizer. A pass to the slot connected with Edmonton product David Schlemko who raced in alone, but his cheeky backhand try sailed wide.

With 7:40 to play, Justin Schultz stepped up in the neutral zone and lost the gamble. On the ensuing 2-on-1, Petrell put on the afterburners and disrupted the cross-ice pass attempt by diving and sweeping the puck to the corner with a wonderful second effort.

Moments later at the other end, Gagner unloaded with a wrist shot that rang off the crossbar.

Looking to extend their lead to 2-0, the Oilers crashed the crease hard and it nearly resulted in Petrell's second of the night, but Johnson denied the chance.

After two periods of play, the Oilers continued to lead 1-0. The Coyotes held a slim 17-15 edge in shots.

Four minutes in, Coyotes defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson spotted Antoine Vermett up ice. His lengthy stretch pass connected and his teammate raced in alone on a breakaway. Standing tall, Dubnyk made a sensational blocker save to keep his team in the lead.

Back the other way, Gagner spotted Hemsky in the slot for a one-on-one shot with Johnson, but No. 83's attempt was emphatically snatched by the netminder.

Petrell's quest for another continued late in the third as he danced in on a 2-on-1, but his shot was easily stopped by the pad of Johnson.

With about two minutes to play, Dubnyk came up with a series of miraculous saves as the Coyotes crashed the crease hard.

At 18:14, Gagner was charged with a questionable interference penalty. Phoenix pulled Johnson shortly into the power-play to make it a 6-on-4 advantage. And with 19 seconds to play, Nick Johnson hopped on a rebound at the doorstep to make it a 1-1 game.

Looking for revenge, Gagner was stopped on a partial 2-on-1 with Yakupov early in the extra frame.

Vermette was charged with high-sticking moments later, giving the Oilers a 4-on-3 power-play. Late in the man-advantage, Yakupov ended with it an out-of-the-air shot.
