The Edmonton Oilers battled the Anaheim Ducks, including a season-high 22 shots in the second period, but a trio of Ducks goals in the third helped lift the home side to a 4-2 victory at the Honda Center on Monday night.

Jordan Eberle and Shawn Horcoff scored the Edmonton goals in the loss.

FIRST PERIOD

The two sides went over five minutes without either team getting a shot on goal. Finally, with 14:13 to play in the opening frame, Getzlaf spun and moved in towards the Oilers goal before attempting a close-in wrister from the bottom of the right circle. Edmonton starting goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin had to be sharp in making the save.

Near the midway point of the period, Bobby Ryan rang a shot off the post on a one-timer in what was the Ducks' best scoring chance yet.

Edmonton's first shot on goal came on a two-on-one rush as Taylor Hall took a feed from Ales Hemsky but his backhand attempt was denied by Jonas Hiller.

The Ducks hit their second post of the period with just over eight minutes to play in the first. Teemu Selanne stopped at the hash marks before ringing a shot off the far iron behind Khabibulin.

Edmonton took the game's first penalty as Ales Hemsky was sent off for tripping with 4:41 to play.

With one second remaining in the penalty, the Oilers were caught on a bad line change sending the Ducks towards the net en masse. Ryan's feed over to a driving Jason Blake resulted in a tipped attempt on goal. Khabibulin made the stop but the puck made a weird bounce of Corey Potter and into the back of the net.

Shots on goal after 20 minutes were 11 to 4 in favour of the Ducks.

SECOND PERIOD

The Oilers came out flying to start the second with four shots in the opening 80 seconds -- matching their output from the entire opening frame.

Edmonton swarmed the net again just over three minutes in, nearly jamming the puck in during a wild goalmouth scramble in front of Hiller. Shots on goal in the period to this point were 9 to 1 for the Oilers.

With 3:23 to go in the period, Ryan Smyth nearly jammed the puck in after coming out from behind with the puck. But once again, Hiller was equal to the task.

Shots with just minutes to go in the second were 23 to 16 for Edmonton -- 19 to 5 overall in the period -- but neither team had a goal in the middle frame.

The Oilers finally tied it up with 30 seconds to go in the period. Nick Schultz teed up a blast from the left point that was deflected on its way to the net by Shawn Horcoff.

After 40 minutes, shots were 26 to 19 for the Oilers. Edmonton had a season-high 22 shots in the period, outshooting the Ducks 22 to 8 in the frame.

THIRD PERIOD

The Oilers nearly took the lead 3:20 into the third period. Corey Potter took down Andrew Cogliano as the Ducks went on the attack. Ryan Whitney picked up the loose puck and fired it across the neutral zone onto the stick of Jordan Eberle, who sprung in all alone.

Eberle, who spent a good portion of the game shuttling between the second and fourth lines in place of Darcy Hordichuk, tried to deke out Hiller but was denied.

With 11:51 to play in the third, Bobby Ryan scored to put Anaheim back in the lead. Teemu Selanne made a great pass out of his own zone to a streaking Ryan in the neutral zone. Ryan drove to the net before backhanding it past Khabibulin to make it 2-1 Ducks.

With the goal, Teemu Selanne tied former Oiler Jari Kurri for 19th on the NHL's all-time scoring list.

Moments later, Andy Sutton took a roughing penalty to put Anaheim on the power play. The Oilers were able to kill it off, however.

Anaheim nearly made it 3-1 with just over six minutes to play. A shot got in behind Khabibulin but the Oilers netminder was able to swat it out of harm's way.

Corey Perry put home a wrister from the slot with 3:20 to go, actually extending Anaheim's lead to 3-1.

Teemu Selanne was sent off for tripping in the latter stages of the period, giving Edmonton its first man advantage in almost six periods of hockey. On the ensuing power play, Jordan Eberle scored to narrow the gap to 3-2.

Perry added his second of the night on an empty netter to ice the outcome, 4-2.
