Lennart Petrell picked up a goal and an assist, while Ryan Smyth notched his 800th career point with a helper on Jordan Eberle's third-period insurance marker, as the Edmonton Oilers grounded the Winnipeg Jets by a 5-3 score Monday night at the MTS Centre.

FIRST PERIOD

Ondrej Pavelec made a huge save for the Jets early in the opening period to keep the game scoreless. Ales Hemsky broke in alone on the Winnipeg netminder and tried to roof it but Pavelec stacked his pads to keep it out.

At the other end of the ice, Kyle Wellwood skated in behind the Oilers defence and attempted a close-in chance on Devan Dubnyk but the Edmonton goalie was up to the task.

The Oilers came within inches of scoring seven minutes into the opening frame. At the tail end of a nice give-and-go, Taylor Hall found Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the slot with a wide open net but the rookie pivot was tied up by Dustin Byfuglien and couldn't get a handle on the puck.

Dubnyk made a nice stop just past the midway point of the period, sliding over to scoop up a redirection attempt by Wellwood.

After one period, shots on goal were 12 to 7 for the Oilers.

SECOND PERIOD

The game's first penalty went to Winnipeg as Dustin Byfuglien was sent off for holding Taylor Hall's stick as the team's top line was putting the pressure on in the Jets zone.

After Winnipeg killed off that penalty, Dubnyk slid across to make a brilliant pad save off Evander Kane who tried to one-time a feed into the back of the net.

The first Edmonton penalty of the night came with six minutes left in the second. Taylor Hall received two minutes for hooking.

On the ensuing man advantage, the Jets scored to take the lead. Nik Antropov had the puck at the side of the end where he threaded it over to Kyle Wellwood at the other post. Wellwood made no mistake, shovelling it past Dubnyk for the 1-0 marker.

Late in the second, Evander Kane rode Corey Potter hard into the boards and received two for roughing as a result.

It took the Oilers only moments into the man advantage to even the game up at 1-1. Hall found Whitney at the blue line where he rifled it blocker side past Pavelec for the goal.

Tempers flared moments later after Bryan Little skated into a scrum and popped Hall after the Oilers winger fired the puck on goal late after a whistle. Little got two for roughing and Hall got two for unsportsmanlike conduct.

With 32.7 seconds to play in the middle frame and the teams playing four on four, Byfuglien found Burmistrov for a quick one-timer in-close to put the Jets back front 2-1.

Shots on goal after two were 17 to 15 for the Jets.

THIRD PERIOD

A Blake Wheeler penalty early in the third put the Oilers on the power play.

The Oilers connected on the power play to tie the game at 2-2. Ryan Jones dug up a rebound at the top of the crease and hammered it past Pavelec to make it 2-2.

35 seconds later, Lennart Petrell came skating down the right side where he wristed it five-hole past Pavelec to give Edmonton its first lead of the night.

Hall scored midway through the final frame to give Edmonton a 4-2 lead. The winger fanned on a shot but it managed to hop skip and find its way past a screened Pavelec with Petrell perched in front of the net.

The Oilers' third period outburst continued late in the stanza when Ryan Smyth sprung Jordan Eberle on a clear-cut breakaway. No. 14 made several slick dekes before scooping the puck up and over Pavelec on his backhand, putting the visitors up 5-2. With the helper, Smyth picked up his 800th career point.

The Jets didn't go quietly, scoring 1:16 later when Nik Antropov hammered home his ninth of the season; but, and with the goalie sitting on the home side's bench for an extra-attacker, it was too little, too late. The Oilers cruised to the buzzer, earning the win with a decisive 5-3 victory in Winnipeg.
