Goals by Toby Petersen, Steve Ott and Michael Ryder plus an empty-netter from Radek Dvorak helped lead the Dallas Stars to a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got the lone marker for Edmonton.

Dallas carried the play in the early going, outshooting Edmonton 5-2 over the first six minutes but were unable to generate a truly dangerous scoring chance.

With 11:30 to play in the opening frame, Toby Petersen scored to give Dallas a 1-0 lead. Tom Wandell took the puck behind the net and tossed it out front to Petersen who corralled the puck and wristed it past Oilers starting netminder Nikolai Khabibulin for the goal.

Moments after the goal, Sam Gagner took the game's first penalty - a slashing minor with 11:15 to go in the first. The Oilers were able to kill it off.

Jordan Eberle had the best chance for the Oilers in the first period to the 15-minute mark when he took the puck into the Stars zone and cut across into the slot. His quick low shot was turned aside by Stars starting goalie Kari Lehtonen.

A couple minutes later, Ales Hemsky took a feed from Sam Gagner at the left faceoff circle and one-timed it off the corner of the pipes where the crossbar and post meet.

Mike Ribeiro took a cross-checking penalty late in the period to give the Oilers their first man advantage of the night.

Shots on goal after one were 14 to 7 in favour of Dallas. Late in the period, Hemsky was hit awkwardly by Mark Fistric and went to the bench in pain but he returned for the start of the second.

Dallas nearly extended its lead to 2-0 Loui Eriksson fired as shot from the right circle that was tipped by Jamie Benn but kicked away by Khabibulin. The rebound was right there for Benn to put in the net but he couldn't get a handle on it. Hemsky was stationed at the top of the crease to ensure the Stars winger didn't make it 2-0.

Several minutes later, they did make it a two-goal game. Ribeiro had the puck behind the Oilers net and backhanded it in front to Steve Ott. Ott made no mistake, shooting it past Khabibulin for the goal.

Khabibulin made a big stop with 5:17 to go in the second. Radek Dvorak teed up a shot from the top of the right circle but the Oilers netminder was able to make the stop and control the rebound.

About 40 seconds later, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored to cut the deficit to 2-1. Jordan Eberle centered the feed to RNH in the slot. It was poked at by Stars defenceman Sheldon Souray but the Oilers rookie kept with it and was able to wrist it just past the right pad of Lehtonen for the goal.

Less than a minute later, Dallas struck again to regain their two-goal lead. Michael Ryder converted with a wicked blast from the high slot on a four-on-one glove side behind Khabibulin.

Shots on goal after two periods were 27 to 14.

A hooking penalty to Brendan Morrow 3:34 into the period gave the Oilers an opportunity to get back in the game. However, the visitors were unable to generate much in the way of chances on the ensuing man advantage.

12 minutes into the final frame, Edmonton had only one shot in the period as the Stars did a great job limiting their ability to get pucks to the net.

A penalty with about six minutes to go for delay of game to Souray gave Edmonton yet another chance to pull closer on the power play but once again they were unable to generate enough offence to pot their second goal of the night.

With 3:19 to go, Morrow took his third penalty of the night for one last crack at it for the Oilers.
