Iginla hat trick leads Flames over Oilers
Edmonton Oilers 1, Calgary Flames 6

Jarome Iginla scored three goals to lead the Calgary Flames to a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers at the Saddledome on Wednesday night. Playing on back-to-back nights after a tough win last night against Vancouver, Edmonton was outshot 47 to 22.

The Oilers' lone goal was scored by Magnus Paajarvi.

FIRST PERIOD

Khabibulin made some big stops early on as first he had to be sharp in tipping a Daymond Langkow point shot and then about a minute later, denied Olli Jokinen on a blast from the hash marks.

He made another stop just past the six-minute mark as the Flames held a 6-1 edge in shots on Edmonton in the early going of the opening frame.

Alex Tanguay split the defence and wired a shot off the iron behind the Oilers netminder with 13 minutes to play in the first in what was Calgary's best scoring chance to that point.

Edmonton had their best chance of the period four minutes later as Andrew Cogliano stretched to redirect a centering pass from Linus Omark off the rush. Flames netminder Miikka Kiprusoff had to be sharp to knock the deflection away with his blocker.

Calgary continued to dominate as the period progressed, increasing their shot advantage to 16 to 3 by the 17-minute mark.

The first penalty of the game came to the Oilers, receiving two minutes for too many men with 3:44 to go in the opening frame.

With 1:41 to play in the period, Liam Reddox slapped a loose stick at the puck and the result was a penalty shot. The Flames elected to have Alex Tanguay shoot it and Khabibulin came up big, denying the Calgary sharpshooter.

Shot count after one period was 20 to 3 for the Flames but the game remained scoreless.

SECOND PERIOD

3:06 into the middle frame, the Oilers took their second too many men penalty of the game and this time, Calgary converted. 38 seconds into the penalty, Rene Bourque completed a wraparound attempt just inside the far post to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.

Calgary nearly doubled their lead near the midway point of the second when Alex Tanguay made a nifty move to get around Taylor Chorney to get in the clear but his shot on goal was turned away by Khabibulin.

With 6:42 to go, the Flames did convert, however. Jarome Iginla wristed a shot from the left hash marks past the Oilers netminder to make it 2-0. The goal was Iginla's 40th of the season.

An Andrew Cogliano penalty late in the period put the Flames back on the power play and again Jarome Iginla contributed a power play goal. Tanguay fed Iginla with a pass on the left faceoff circle dot and he one-timed it in to give Calgary a 3-0 lead.

Shots on goal after 40 minutes were 34 to 11 for the Flames.

THIRD PERIOD

59 seconds into the third period, Calgary struck again to increase their lead to four goals. Alex Tanguay took a feed from Mikael Backlund and gently deposited into the open net.

With each team playing with four skaters aside, the Oilers broke the shutout as Magnus Paajarvi scored to make it a 4-1 game. Paajarvi carried it into the zone and put the puck on net. Cogliano was stationed in front and picked up the rebound, getting it back to the Swedish winger who put it in for the goal.

Calgary got that goal back several minutes later. Greg Nemisz had the puck behind the Oilers net before finding Curtis Glencross alone in the slot. Glencross fired it inside the post to make it 5-1.

23 seconds later, the Flames made it 6-1. Iginla swooped in to backhand a rebound past Khabibulin to notch the hat trick.

The final shot tally was 47 to 22 for the Flames.
