Oilers drop final game of road trip in Pittsburgh
Edmonton Oilers 1, Pittsburgh Penguins 5

The Edmonton Oilers wrapped up a five-game road trip with a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. Chris Kunitz scored a pair of goals for the host Penguins while the other three goals were scored by Maxime Talbot, Jordan Staal and Zbynek Michalek. Ryan Jones potted the lone Oilers marker as the team finished the five-game trip with a 1-3-1 record.

  Under the Scope

FIRST PERIOD

Pittsburgh carried the play early on, with four shots in the opening five minutes to Edmonton's none but had not yet created anything overly dangerous. The best chance may have come from Albertan Mark Letestu as he skated out from the corner and cut in front of the net but his backhand went wide.

The Penguins received the game's first power play when Linus Omark held up Craig Adams while Pittsburgh rushed into the Edmonton zone. Adams would have been clear and free if the Oilers winger had not hooked him down.

During the man advantage, the Oilers had arguably the best chance when Cogliano and Reddox skated in on a two-on-one. Cogliano fed the puck over to Reddox whose shot went just wide.

Shortly after the penalty expired, Ryan Jones hooked Paul Martin in the Pittsburgh zone to put the Penguins back on the power play.

After another successful kill, Omark made a great play to get in behind the Pens defence and put himself one-on-one with netminder Marc-Andre Fleury but his off-balance shot from the low slot went off the post.

15 minutes into the period, shots on goal were 11 to 1 for Pittsburgh.

With just over three minutes to play in the first, the Oilers had a great chance to get on the board first. Alex Kovalev was sent off for holding the stick and 14 seconds later, Paul Martin got a cross-checking penalty to give them a two-man advantage. Unfortunately, the Oilers were unable to register a shot on goal during the five-on-three.

Shortly after it expired, Chris Kunitz picked up the puck in front of the net and neatly backhanded it past Dubnyk to make it 1-0 Penguins.

The opening period's final shot count was 13 to 2 in favour of the Pens.

SECOND PERIOD

Edmonton had six shots on net in the opening three minutes of the second, making up for their lack off offensive output in the first but still could not solve Fleury.

Pittsburgh's Chris Conner nearly made it a 2-0 game about four minutes into the middle frame when his wrister from the left hash marks right off the faceoff rang off the post behind Dubnyk.

About a minute later, Max Talbot rang a shot off the post while the net was being dislodged by Dubnyk at the same time. Rupp was at the doorstep and may have been able to put the rebound into the open net if the net was still in place but it was ruled no goal.

A minute after that, Pittsburgh finally connected to get that two-goal lead. Talbot snuck in behind the Oilers defence and made a nice deke before putting the puck in. After the goal, Talbot crashed into Dubnyk.

Kunitz slashed the stick out of Brule's hands with 11:51 to go in the second period to put Edmonton on the power play for the first time in this stanza.

Pittsburgh extended their lead to 3-0 with 1:04 left in the second. With Strudwick serving a penalty, the puck squirted out from behind the net to Tyler Kennedy in front. Kennedy's shot squirted through the legs of Dubnyk but not over the line. Jordan Staal snuck in behind the Oilers netminder and poked it in.

Shots on goal after 40 minutes were 23 to 13 for Pittsburgh.

THIRD PERIOD

Ryan Jones scored his 16th goal of the season 1:11 into the third period. Giroux cut across the zone and made a drop pass to Cogliano who put it on net. Jones was at the top of the crease to bang home the rebound and make it a 3-1 game.

However, Pittsburgh got that goal back several minutes later. Zbynek Michalek tees up a blast from the top of the circle that eludes Dubnyk and regains the Pens' three-goal edge.

Things started to get ugly between the two sides as the third period progressed, stemming from Gilbert Brule flattening Kris Letang. In what appeared to be a clean check, Brule was sent off for charging.

A few moments later, the Penguins scored to take a 5-1 lead. A nice pass from James Neal over to Kunitz was converted, giving the Pittsburgh winger his second goal of the game.
