Oilers battle to the end but drop 2-1 OT decision
Edmonton Oilers 1, Detroit Red Wings 2

The Edmonton Oilers battled hard for 64 minutes in what was arguably the team's most gutsy effort of the season but in the end, fell 2-1 in an overtime heartbreaker to the Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena.

  Under the Scope

Ryan Jones scored the team's only goal early in the first period and it took the Red Wings until 24 seconds remained on the clock in the third period before Nicklas Lidstrom tied it up. Pavel Datsyuk scored the overtime winner with 42 seconds to play.

Devan Dubnyk stopped 42 of 44 shots in a losing cause for the Oilers.

The Oilers opened the game with some jump, carrying the majority of the play. Early scoring chances from Ryan Jones and Alex Giroux nearly put Edmonton on the board first.

The next time the team's second line had a shift, they did covert. Jones rifled a shot from the left circle that skipped over the right pad of Jimmy Howard and into the net to make it 1-0 Oilers. Jim Vandermeer got the lone assist on the play.

In the final minute, Cogliano had an exchange behind the Red Wings net with Howard which caused the Detroit netminder to fall down. The puck then squirted out to Giroux in the high slot and he had a wide open net but his shot attempt was blocked.

Right at the end of the period, Cogliano took a slashing penalty to put Detroit on the power play to start period number two.

Shots on goal after 20 minutes were 8 to 6 for the Red Wings.

With Cogliano in the box, Detroit started the middle frame with the man advantage. The Wings had a few good rushes but only managed one shot during the two-minute power play.

While standing in front of the net, Ladislav Smid took a puck off his wrist from a Nicklas Lidstrom point shot. After staying out on the ice and braving through the pain, he eventually went to the bench and then to the Oilers dressing room for treatment.

Smid returned to the ice about four minutes later to help kill off Edmonton's second penalty of the night. The Oilers PK unit did just that.

Detroit's third power play of the period occurred just past the midway point when Ryan Jones was sent off for roughing but once again the Oilers were solid on the penalty kill, keeping it a one-goal game.

Jordan Eberle almost made it 2-0 with less than five minutes to play in the second but Howard got a piece of the puck as he tried to deke it around him.

Detroit was finally given its first penalty with 3:37 left in the second. Tomas Holmstrom was called for slashing Giroux.

On the ensuing power play, Giroux nearly made it a 2-0 game after Eberle's initial shot was kicked out by Howard. The Oilers winger had a wide open net but his shot was blocked by a sprawled-out Brad Stuart. Tom Gilbert also had a scoring chance during the scrambly sequence.

Detroit looked to have tied the game with 21.1 seconds to go in the second. A point shot by Lidstrom went off the glove of Todd Bertuzzi who was standing in front of the net. After review, it was indeed ruled no goal.

After two periods, shots on goal were 23 to 18 for Detroit.

Edmonton went on its second power play of the game 90 seconds into the third after Valtteri Filppula hooked down Liam Reddox.

The Oilers found themselves in trouble with 14 minutes to go in the third. Penalties by Tom Gilbert and Jim Vandermeer 34 seconds apart put Edmonton down two men with Detroit pressing for the equalizer.

Edmonton was stuck in their end for almost the entire power play but managed to gut their way through a complete penalty kill.

With 8:17 to play, Andrew Cogliano was clipped with a high stick by Drew Miller which gave the Oilers a four-minute power play.

Jason Strudwick was about to be called on a penalty with less than 30 seconds to go but during the delayed penalty a point shot by Lidstrom went off the skate of Cogliano and changed directions on its way to the net. The puck slipped just inside the right post for the goal, tying the game at 1-1. The goal came with 24 seconds to play.

Shots on goal after regulation time was 42 to 25 in favour of the Red Wings.

The teams traded chances in the opening minute of OT. First, Eberle centered a pass to Kurtis Foster whose blast was turned away by Howard. Coming back the other way, Johan Franzen skated in and had his backhand from the top of the crease swatted away by Dubnyk.

Detroit scored the decisive marker with 42 seconds to go in the extra frame. Pavel Datsyuk wired a wrister from the slot that beat Dubnyk blocker side to give the Red Wings the 2-1 win.
