The Edmonton Oilers got off to a slow start and it cost them in the form of a 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night.
Under the Scope
Although by the end of the game, Edmonton had managed to narrow the shot margin to two, Philadelphia outshot the Oilers 17-1 in the opening period on the strength of two goals from Jeff Carter. J-F Jacques scored the lone Oilers goal.
The Oilers weren't able to generate much offence on the man advantage and with 23 seconds left in Pronger's penalty, Linus Omark tried to get rid of the puck at the point but had it blocked. In his pursuit of Darroll Powe, he interfered with the Flyers forward and received Edmonton's first penalty of the night.
The Flyers had the first quality scoring chance of the night with 11:37 to play in the opening frame. A weird bounce off the end boards eluded Kurtis Foster as the puck went straight to Ville Leino. His backhand attempt was denied by Edmonton netminder Devan Dubnyk.
31 seconds later, Danny Briere picked up a great stretch pass from Matt Carle and broke in alone on Dubnyk. He made no mistake, rifling it top right corner to make it 1-0 Flyers.
With 7:03 to play in the first, Ladislav Smid hammered Powe from behind into the boards. Smid received a five-minute major for boarding as a result.
The Oilers PK did a good job, limiting the Flyers to only two shots on goal for the majority of the five-minute power play. However, with 17 seconds left Briere found Jeff Carter at the top of the crease and the jammed it in for the goal to make it 2-0.
With 1:35 left in the first, shots on goal were 16 to 0 but the Oilers had their first chance to get a shot. Sean O'Donnell got two minutes for high sticking Colin Fraser to put Edmonton back on the power play.
And indeed, the Oilers' first shot on goal came with 1:15 left in the first. The shot came from Kurtis Foster at the top of the left circle and was steered away by Flyers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.
Shots on goal after 20 minutes were 17-1 for the Flyers, who also led on the scoreboard 2-0.
The Oilers came out strong in the second period, outshooting Philadelphia 4-1 over the opening 6:30 of the middle frame.
However, it was the Flyers who scored to extend their lead. With 12:55 to go in the second, Van Riemsdyk, Timonen and Carter teamed up for a nice three-way passing play that culminated in Timonen finding Carter in the slot for a tap-in to make it a 3-0 game.
55 seconds later, J-F Jacques tipped home a Smid point shot to narrow the gap back to two goals at 3-1.
Shots on goal in the second period were 11 to 5 for Edmonton. However, each team had a goal and the Oilers remained down by a pair.
Edmonton continued to pick up their play in the third period, holding a 5-1 edge in shots through the first nine minutes of the final frame but were still looking for a goal to make it a one-score game.
As the period reached the midway point, the Flyers started to pick it up once again with a few good scoring chances on Dubnyk. However, the Oilers netminder denied Hartnell, Briere and Versteeg in succession to keep it at 3-1.
The Oilers had a great chance to narrow the deficit with just under three minutes to play. Andrew Cogliano was perched in front of the Philly net and was denied on a trio of backhand attempts by Bobrovsky.
Blair Betts added an empty-net goal in the final minute to make the final 4-1.
Despite spotting the Flyers a 16-shot lead early in the game, the final shot count was 27 to 25 in favour of the Flyers as Edmonton's play improved throughout. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
