Oilers stop Avalanche in 5-1 victory
Edmonton Oilers 5, Colorado Avalanche 1

The Edmonton Oilers scored early and scored often en route to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche in Denver on Saturday night. Sam Gagner had a three-point night while Tom Gilbert, Linus Omark and Andrew Cogliano each put two points on the board in the victory.

  Under the Scope

FIRST PERIOD

On his first shift this season with the Oilers following a call-up from Oklahoma City, Alex Plante found his way onto the scoresheet. Unfortunately, it was a hooking penalty as Brandon Yip tried to break in alone on the Oilers goal.

On the ensuing power play, Dubnyk made a ncie stop after Milan Hejduk fed Matt Duchene at the right circle. The Oilers netminder kicked out his right pad to make the stop.

At the 4:11 mark, Colorado took a penalty to put Edmonton on the power play for the first time. Ryan Wilson clipped Linus Omark with a high stick with play deep in the Avalanche zone.

It only took the Oilers eight seconds to convert on the man advantage. Andrew Cogliano scooped up a loose puck in the slot and poked it to Sam Gagner who fired it past Colorado starting goaltender Brian Elliott to make it 1-0 Edmonton.

At 8:04 of the first period, Philippe Dupuis  took a tripping penalty, which got Alex Giroux on the ice as part of the team's power play unit alongside Jordan Eberle and Shawn Horcoff.

Later on that man advantage, Tom Gilbert's pass went off the heel of his stick straight to Gagner. He pushed it over to Ryan Jones who easily deposited it into the open net with Elliott out of position.

The Oilers had a 14 to 6 shot advantage following the first period and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.

SECOND PERIOD

The Oilers picked up right where they left off in the second period. 39 seconds in, Magnus Paajarvi fired a cross-ice pass to Shawn Horcoff, who made no mistake blasting it from the high slot past Elliott to extend the Oilers' lead to 3-0.

A couple minutes later, David Koci and Steve MacIntyre dropped the gloves. MacIntyre got some huge right-hand shots on Koci, who had difficulty getting much offence on the Oilers enforcer due to MacIntyre's reach advantage.

With 11:24 left in the middle frame. Alex Giroux scored his first goal of the season. Linus Omark made a spin at the top of the right circle befor directing it on goal. Giroux stood in front where he tipped it past Elliott.

The goal spelled the end of the night for Brian Elliott as he was replaced in goal by Peter Budaj.

Colorado started to find some life after the goalie switch. The Avalanche went on a 9-1 run in shots through the middle part of the period.

The Avs pulled even in shots at 22-22 at the same time they scored their first goal of the game. With 4:47 to play. John-Michael Liles blasted a shot from the right point. Dubnyk made the initial stop but both David Jones and Ryan O'Reilly jammed at the rebound. O'Reilly got the final stick on it to get credit for the goal which made it a 4-1 game.

Colorado had 20 shots in the second period and at the end of 40 minutes were leading the Oilers 26 to 22 on the shot clock. However, the Oilers had a 4-1 lead in the game.

THIRD PERIOD

29 seconds into the third period, the Oilers scored a shorthanded goal to make it a 5-1 game. Liam Reddox skated in on a two-on-one with Andrew Cogliano. Reddox made a nice feed over to Cogliano for the tap-in into the wide open net.

The Oilers had a scare about 90 seconds later when Gagner fell awkwardly into the boards. However, he was able to skate to the bench under his own power. He returned to the ice a couple of minutes later.

With 6:36 to play in the third, Alex Plante dropped the gloves with Colorado's Cody McLeod. Neither combatant could claim a victory in the spirited bout.

The final shot count was 34-31 in favour of Colorado.
