Five second-period penalties stalled the Oilers offence and ultimately their chances of earning two points Tuesday night. The Leafs scored two power-play goals and outshot the Oil 34-24 to defeat the home team 4-1 at Rexall Place. Jordan Eberle scored Edmonton's lone goal, while Nikolai Khabibulin made 30 saves in the losing effort.
Under the Scope
The Oilers made an effort to correct their firepower problems by pouncing on Toronto's Jean-Sebastien Giguere with four shots in the game's first two minutes. A roughing minor to Colby Armstrong gave Edmonton a man-advantage for the following two, but the club couldn't add to its tally on the power-play.
The Leafs found some traction near the five-minute mark, and at 5:55, the pressure paid off. From the right point, Edmonton native Dion Phaneuf wired the puck past Khabibulin to give the visitors a 1-0 lead on three shots.
The Oilers maintained their shot lead, however, and fired one home six minutes later. After Giguere stopped Taylor Hall's original shot, linemate Sam Gagner caught the rebound and backhanded a perfect centering pass to Eberle, who flipped it top shelf to tie the game at one.
Edmonton increased its shot lead but Toronto countered with some quality attempts, including a shot by Kris Versteeg that sailed towards an open net but was miraculously stopped by eagle-eyed Khabibulin.
After 20 minutes, the Oilers and Leafs were even on all accounts with one goal on 12 shots each.
Two consecutive Edmonton penalties gave Toronto a pair of power-plays early in the second period. Although the Oil killed Gilbert's Brule's infraction, Mikhail Grabovski cut Zack Stortini's penalty short by deflecting a slap-pass from Clarke MacArthur into the net, renewing the Leafs lead.
Toronto crafted a 20-15 shot lead before Stortini and Colton Orr stopped the clock with a fierce scrap. The lengthy brawl moved from the face-off circle to the boards and was highlighted by serious punches and significant flying hair. In the end, the players were plied apart and assessed fighting majors.
On the following face-off, Steve MacIntyre tried to initiate a duel with Phaneuf but sat out two minutes for roughing instead. The Oilers killed that infraction and then another for too many men.
Although the Leafs couldn't capitalize on those power-plays, they got the job done one minute later. After a shot from Versteeg, the puck ping-ponged around the crease before being inadvertantly tapped across the line by Jason Strudwick.
The goal gave Toronto a 3-1 lead and 25-15 shot advantage heading into the final frame.
Edmonton topped its second-period shot total only a few minutes into the third, testing Giguere four more times. At 6:16, Phaneuf was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, but the Oilers couldn't narrow the gap with a power-play goal.
The Leafs didn't suffer the same result, however. Midway through Magnus Paajarvi's holding minor, Phil Kessel snapped the puck past Khabibulin to set the score 4-1 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
At 11:35, MacIntyre and Orr got a little testy and were ushered off the ice with 10-minute misconducts. A late Leafs penalty for too many men capped the infractions, but it was too late for Edmonton to capitalize and the club dropped a 4-1 decision to Toronto.
