The Oilers battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the final 10 minutes of regulation vs. the Ducks, but little did they know plenty of action remained. A thrilling overtime paved the way a marathon shootout in which goaltenders Nikolai Khabibulin and Jonas Hiller dominated. In the 10th round, Anaheim's Cam Fowler snapped home the game-winner to limit the Oilers to a single point in a 3-2 shootout loss.
Under the Scope
The Oilers and Ducks managed a shot each before Anaheim's Paul Mara took a roughing minor at 3:31. A giveaway in the defensive zone nearly resulted in a shorthanded goal, but Corey Perry hit Khabibulin's left post and the scoreless game continued.
Near the seven-minute mark, Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff collided with Perry in the neutral zone. He soon retired to the dressing room, prompting head coach Tom Renney to alternate Sam Gagner and Colin Fraser in the center position between Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall. It was later announced that Horcoff suffered a right knee injury and would not return to the game.
Edmonton owned a 7-1 shot lead by the period's midway point, but Anaheim clawed back to make it 10-8 heading into the middle frame.
The Ducks took control of the shot clock early in the second period and, at 5:44, took the lead where it counts: from the mid-slot, Saku Koivu wired a wrister past Khabibulin to put the visitors up 1-0.
Less than a minute later, a hooking minor to Todd Marchant gave the Oilers their second power-play, but the club couldn't tie it up on man-advantage. Edmonton returned the favour as the period progressed, shutting down two Anaheim power-plays.
After 40 minutes, the shots were tied at 17 and the Ducks held a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks were feisty at the start of the third, adding seven shots on Khabibulin while the Oilers only got one on Hiller. At 6:32, the visitors posted their 25th shot and second goal of the night, courtesy of Teemu Selanne.
After a concerted effort, the Oilers got that one back. With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Ryan Jones capped an offensive assault with a face-off circle shot that bounced past Hiller and got Edmonton back within one.
A fourth Oilers power-play shortly after the goal gave the team the edge in men and shots, which eventually paid off in an equalizer. With only two seconds left in Andy Sutton's interference minor, Dustin Penner strode in and scored short side to tie the game at two.
With 2:29 left in regulation, Tom Gilbert was assessed a delay of game penalty for flipping the puck over the glass. Edmonton continued its perfect penalty-killing, however, and the 2-2 game stretched into overtime.
The Oilers and Ducks tallied four and three shots respectively in sudden death, but Hiller and Khabibulin were perfect and forced the game into a shootout.
Joffrey Lupul and Hall gave Anaheim and Edmonton one goal each in the first three rounds of shootout. After that it was a goaltending showdown, with Khabibulin and Hiller stopping each attempt through the following six rounds.
Colin Fraser was unsuccessful for the Oilers in the tenth round, but Fowler was not, firing past Khabibulin to give his club the extra point with a 3-2 shootout win Tuesday night.
