Martin Hanzal and Lee Stempniak each scored a pair of goals and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-0 at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona on Tuesday night. The loss ensured the Oilers a split in their two-game road trip.
Under the Scope
Phoenix got off to a fast start, scoring 48 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. After an initial shot on goal by David Schlemko, Ray Whitney picked up the rebound to the blocker side of Oilers starting goaltender Devan Dubnyk. He fed the puck across the slot to Martin Hanzal who deposted it into the open net.
The Coyotes continued to carry the play through the first 10 minutes of the opening frame. On one rush, Whitney made a nice behind-the-back pass over to Keith Yandle as the defenceman was trailing the play. His shot on goal was turned aside by Dubnyk, however.
The game's first penalty went to Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff with 9:45 to play in the first, putting Phoenix up a man. Horcoff held up Eric Belanger as he attempted to get in a forechecking position in the Coyotes zone.
With 4:17 to play in the first, Dubnyk made a nice glove snag on Scottie Upshall to preserve the one-goal difference. Upshall made a nice move to cut across the slot and tried to shoot it towards the opposite direction.
After one period, shots on goal were 16-4 in favour of the Coyotes.
The Coyotes struck quickly once again in the second. Wojtek Wolski took the puck from the side boards and skated to the front of the net where he flicked it past Dubnyk to make it a 2-0 game.
Edmonton started to pick up their play as the middle frame progressed. Magnus Paajarvi nearly pounced on a loose puck in the crease but Ilya Bryzgalov was able to cover it up. On the next shift, Ryan Whitney had a clear shot from the high slot that the Coyotes netminder had to be sharp in turning away.
The Oilers' barrage finally drew the team's first power play of the night. With the Hall-Eberle-Horcoff line pressuring, Schlemko took a hooking penalty on Taylor Hall in the slot. Phoenix was able to kill it off, however.
11 minutes into the period, shots on goal were 8-2 for Edmonton.
With Andrew Cogliano in the box for delay of game after clearing the puck over the glass, Phoenix went on the power play. On the ensuing man advantage, Lee Stempniak scored after picking up his own rebound on the rush. Stempniak's initial shot was stopped by Dubnyk but the puck squirted out and he slid the rebound into the net.
Shots on goal after two periods were 23-16 in favour of the Coyotes. Edmoton had a 12-7 shot advantage in the second but were outscored 2-0 in the middle frame.
Scottie Upshall took a holding penalty five minutes into the third period, giving Edmonton another power play with a chance to get back some momentum. The Oilers had a few chances on the five-on-four but could not convert.
Magnus Paajarvi found himself on the third line to start the middle frame, being rewarded for his strong play on the fourth unit.
With 6:15 to play in the third, Phoenix extended its lead to 4-0. Martin Hanzal wristed the puck from the right faceoff circle top corner past Dubnyk for his second goal of the night.
Phoenix scored their fifth of the night with 51 seconds to play in the game. Stempniak converted a feed across the crease from Eric Belanger to make it a 5-0 final.
