Dubnyk denies Ducks as Oilers win 4-2
Edmonton Oilers 4, Anaheim Ducks 2

Devan Dubnyk stopped 38 of 40 shots and Ales Hemsky scored a go-ahead goal in the third period to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center on Sunday night.

Under the Scope

FIRST PERIOD

The first penalty of the game went to the Oilers just over five minutes into the opening frame. Gilbert Brule took a slashing penalty, hacking the stick out of the hands of Anaheim centre Nick Bonino.

Anaheim's best chance on the ensuing power play came when Saku Koivu set up Jason Blake on a no-look backhand pass to the top of the crease. Blake one-timed it and Dubnyk had to be sharp to make the save.

Shots 7:46 into the game were 8-1 for Anaheim as the Ducks carried a distinct edge in the play early on.

Brandon McMillan nearly put the Ducks on the board as he had a point-blank opportunity to give his team the lead but Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk got just enough of a piece of McMillan's backhand attempt from the top of the crease to make it go wide.

Shots on goal were 12-1 Anaheim before Dustin Penner got off a quick shot from the right hash marks that Anaheim starting goaltender Jonas Hiller had to be sharp in turning away with his blocker side.

14:18 into the first, Aaron Voros took a shot at Theo Peckham and as a result was sent off for roughing, giving Edmonton their first power play of the night.

The final shot tally for the first period was 19 to 4 for the Ducks.

SECOND PERIOD

Corey Perry nearly scored in the opening two minutes of the second period. His wraparound attempt just missed the mark on the far post wide of Dubnyk. Four minutes later, Perry again had a great chance as his slapper from the right circle was turned away by Dubnyk's blocker.

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead 6:48 into the middle frame. Right off the draw, some good work by Penner to battle for the puck paid off as he dished it to Ales Hemsky. Hemsky took the puck behind the Ducks net before feeding Sam Gagner in front. Gagner made no mistake, shooting it past Hiller for the goal.

Less than two minutes later, Taylor Hall fired the puck past Hiller from the left circle after taking a feed on the rush by Ryan Whitney. Hall's seeing-eye shot went blocker side top corner past the Ducks netminder to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead.

Late in the second, Theo Peckham got a penalty for delay of game after shooting the puck through the photo hole in the glass. The erroneous penalty set off a downward spiral for the Oilers which resulted in the team allowing a pair of goals in the next 30 seconds of the game.

First, eight seconds into the man advantage, the Ducks' Bobby Ryan won the draw back to Lubomir Visnovsky who fed the puck to Fowler. His point shot was tipped by Ryan top corner for the goal.

22 seconds after that, Saku Koivu backhanded a loose puck beyond Dubnyk to knot the game up at 2-2.

Shots on goal were 32-18 Anaheim after 40 minutes. Shot count for the second was only 14-13 for the Ducks.

THIRD PERIOD

Anaheim nearly took the lead in the opening few minutes of the third period as the Ducks went to the attack in a big way.

The best chance came after Dubnyk made the initial stop. With the puck loose in the crease, Nick Bonino had a wide open cage but fanned on the puck. The Oilers netminder was then able to come across and ensure the game remained knotted at 2-2.

10:15 into the third, Dustin Penner made a nice move to get around Andy Sutton and get a shot on net. In the act of getting a shot, Penner drew a penalty from Sutton and put the Oilers on the power play for only the third time tonight. Edmonton had a few chances during the five-on-four advantage but in the end they were unable to convert.

With 6:31 to go in the third, Ales Hemsky scored to put the Oilers in front 3-2. Penner found Hemsky speeding up ice and the Oilers winger turned on the jets to get in behind the Anaheim defence. He made no mistake on his scoring chance, roofing it under the crossbar for the goal.

At the end of the game, Whitney missed an empty net as he tried to fire it into the open cage. The play went back into the Edmonton end where Corey Perry attempted to centre the puck from behind the Oilers net but it went down the ice and in.
