Oilers fall in shootout again, 3-2 to Columbus
Edmonton Oilers 2, Columbus Blue Jackets 3

Taylor Hall scored his first-career NHL goal in the third period to tie the game and Devan Dubnyk was spectacular in stopping 40 of 42 shots but the Edmonton Oilers dropped their second consecutive shootout decision, 3-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Thursday night.

FIRST PERIOD

Edmonton had the first big scoring chance of the game about two minutes in. Magnus Paajarvi made a nice backhand pass to Shawn Horcoff in the slot. Horcoff was all alone at the top of the crease but Blue Jackets starting goaltender Steve Mason waiting him out and made the stop.

Several minutes later, it was Columbus who got on the board first. Kyle Wilson dug the puck out of the corner over to Chris Clark who threw it in front to Samuel Pahlsson. The Jackets pivot wristed it past Devan Dubnyk for the goal.

Jared Boll took the game's first penalty after bowling into Dubnyk on the rush, putting Edmonton on the power play. On the ensuing man advantage, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall and Shawn Horcoff teamed up on a nice three-way passing play that culminated with Hall feeding Horcoff in front. Horcoff buried it past Mason to tie the game at 1-1.

On the next shift, Gagner and Penner both had great chances in front of the net as the Oilers continued to pour the pressure on Columbus but Mason came up with a couple of big saves during a scramble in front.

On that same play, Ales Hemsky took a hooking penalty to give Columbus its first power play. On the kill, Eberle nearly had a shorthanded marker on the rush but was stopped by Mason.

With 1:51 to go in the first, Kyle Wilson scored to restore the Jackets' lead. Derek Dorsett fired a screened shot that was kicked out by Dubnyk but Wilson scooped up the rebound and fired it in to make it 2-1 for Columbus.

After one, shots on goal were 18 to 8 in favour of the host Blue Jackets.

SECOND PERIOD

The two teams traded chances in the early part of the middle frame. Edmonton's best chance in that timeframe came on a shot by Brule that was redirected on goal by a Blue Jackets defender. Mason had to be quick to make the save.

Midway through the period, shots were 6-4 for the Oilers.

Andrew Cogliano had a pair of chances in the slot to get one past Mason but the Jackets netminder stood tall and made a couple of saves.

With Theo Peckham in the box for interference, Dubnyk came up with a couple of big stops on Rick Nash at point-blank range. The Jackets sniper took a pass at the top of the crease and redirected it on goal. The Oilers goaltender was sharp in keeping it a one-goal game.

Late in the second, Cogliano's shot was smothered by Mason. MacIntyre picked up the rebound and put it in but the whistle had gone.

Shots were 11-8 for Edmonton in the second period. Overall, Columbus still had the edge on the shot clock at 26-19.

THIRD PERIOD

Columbus got a man advantage early in the third period. Columbus had its best chance when the puck made a wild bounce in front of Dubnyk. Nash tried to jam it in but the Oilers goaltender was able to smother it.

Five minutes in, Hemsky fed Horcoff in the high slot. The Oilers captain fired it along the ice and Mason slid across to make the save.

Dubnyk came up big again 6:30 into the period as Nikita Filatov took a feed from centre ice and sprung in alone behind the Edmonton defence. Filatov tried to go glove side but Dubnyk denied him and held the rebound.

In an effort to shake things up, Coach Renney made some big changes to his forward lines at times in the final frame. He had Hemsky with Horcoff and Paajarvi as well as Penner, Cogliano and Brule plus Gagner with Hall and Eberle.

Good work by Paajarvi on the rush drew a slashing penalty from R.J. Umberger. The result was not only the game's tying goal, but the first career NHL goal of Taylor Hall.

The Oilers had plenty of chances on the power play and a delayed penalty at the end of the two minutes was when Hall struck. Theo Peckham teed up a blast from the point and the Oilers rookie tipped it in past Mason.

Columbus had a great chance to regain the lead with eight minutes to play after the Oilers' top penalty killer Shawn Horcoff was sent off for high sticking.

Jakub Voracek broke in alone behind Dubnyk but the Oilers goaltender made a nice blocker save to keep it on even terms.

OVERTIME

The Oilers started the extra period on the power play but were not able to convert.

With 2:30 left in OT, Tom Gilbert was sent off for tripping to give Columbus a power play of their own.

Columbus didn't accomplish anything on the power play, either.

Shots on goal after three periods and overtime were 42 to 27 for the Blue Jackets.

SHOOTOUT

Gagner went first in the shootout for the Oilers. His deke was denied by Mason. Rick Nash then scored blocker side on Dubnyk.

In the next round, Brule rang it off the post blocker side on Mason. Nikita Filatov then scored to ice the outcome.
