Oilers rally to secure a point against the Flames
Edmonton Oilers 4, Calgary Flames 5

The Edmonton Oilers rallied from a three-goal deficit to force overtime and a shootout on Tuesday night in Calgary against the Flames but it was the home team that ultimately prevailed with a 5-4 win in the shootout.

FIRST PERIOD

The Oilers debuted their new defensive pairings tonight against the Flames. Tom Gilbert started the game with Ryan Whitney while Theo Peckham was paired with Kurtis Foster. Jason Strudwick and Ladislav Smid formed the third pairing.

Just over five minutes into the period, Gilbert Brule took a hooking penalty. During the delayed penalty, a missed Flames pass went down the ice and almost snuck into the vacated cage as goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was pulled for the extra attacker.

On the ensuing power play, Brendan Morrison scored 23 seconds in to give Calgary a 1-0 lead. Morrison took a pass on the side boards and hammered it past Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin. Olli Jokinen was in front of the net on the screen.

Calgary took their first penalty at the 8:08 mark of the opening frame. Shawn Horcoff was breaking out of the Flames zone and was eyeing a pass up to Jordan Eberle but was upended by Jarome Iginla before he could. The Flames captain was sent off for tripping.

On that man advantage, it was Edmonton's turn to score early. 30 seconds into the power play, Kurtis Foster teed up a blast from the point that beat a screened Kiprusoff blocker side.

With 4:15 to go in the first, Theo Peckham attempted a clearing attempt around the boards but accidentally rang it off his own post. Luckily, the Oilers were able to clear the rebound away.

Late in the period, Renney shook up the pairings again. Peckham played with Gilbert and Foster with Smid along with Whitney and Strudwick.

Magnus Paajarvi was sent off for holding with 30 seconds to play in the opening period and that set up the Flames' second goal of the game. Alex Tanguay fed the puck across the slot over to a pinching Jay Bouwmeester who roofed it for the late goal.

Off the next faceoff, Olli Jokinen and Sam Gagner dropped the gloves. Both players landed some heavy shots with Gagner landing more but Jokinen did take the Oilers forward down at the end.

Shots on goal after one were 12-8 for Calgary.

SECOND PERIOD

Calgary struck 2:02 into the second period to increase their lead to 3-1. Curtis Glencross took a pass from behind the net by Mikael Backlund and flicked it past Khabibulin for the goal.

Brendan Morrison had a shorthanded chance several minutes later, taking advantage of a turnover before breaking in alone on Khabibulin. The Oilers netminder closed the five-hole to make a nice stop and keep the game within reach.

The power play continued to have its troubles for the Oilers as the Flames penalty killers did a good job keeping possession of the puck and keeping Edmonton hemmed in its own end.

Edmonton went on another power play midway through the period but this one didn't go so well, either. Brendan Morrison once again broke in behind the Oilers defence and this time made no mistake, rifling it under the crossbar to make it 4-1 for Calgary.

With 7:48 to play in the second, Colin Fraser and Mark Giordano squared off at centre ice. After a quick bout, Giordano threw Fraser to the ice. The Oilers forward got two minute for instigating on the play as Fraser started the fight after a clean check by Giordano on Taylor Hall

Strudwick dropped the gloves with Calgary's Tim Jackman with 3:23 left in the middle frame. Neither player fell to the ice after a lengthy bout.

Following a solid penalty kill, Jordan Eberle gave the Oilers some life with 16.2 seconds left in the period. Eberle fought off Ian White before backhanded the puck short side past Kiprusoff to narrow the gap to 4-2.

Shots on goal after two periods were 25-14 for the Flames.

THIRD PERIOD

Early in the third, the Oilers put some pressure on the Flames in an attempt to get within striking distance. Gilbert Brule made a nice play off the boards to set up a three-on-one then nearly put the puck in behind Kiprusoff. His deke attempt just slid through the goalmouth.

Paajarvi was set up on a nice breakaway by Cogliano 6:53 into the third. The Swedish rookie made no mistake, fighting off the Flames defender Cory Sarich in pursuit and flicking it past Kiprusoff to make it a one-goal game.

Several minutes later, Edmonton continued its pursuit of the Flames as they continued to battle their way back into the game.

Dustin Penner took the puck in the corner and fed Tom Gilbert at the point. Gilbert wristed it top corner past Kiprusoff to tie the game at 4-4 and complete the three-goal comeback.

After the tying marker, the Flames started to get some more life in them as they started to carry the play a little bit more in the Oilers end but Edmonton continued to fight back and get some chances of their own, the best of which being Gilbert once again in the high slot but this time his shot went high and wide of the Flames net.

A high sticking penalty to Theo Peckham late in the third put Edmonton behind the eight ball in a big way. Calgary put on the pressure but Edmonton's penalty-kill units stood tall and kept the game knotted up at 4-4.

Shots on goal at the end of regulation was 35 to 31 for the Flames. Edmonton outshot Calgary 17 to 10 in the third.

OVERTIME

The extra frame was full of end-to-end action with both sides creating rushes. Calgary had a slight edge through the first three minutes, with a trio of shots on Khabibulin plus a pair of other five-star chances.

Edmonton had two great chances at the end of OT. Hall set up Horcoff with a nice pass across the Flames zone. Horcoff's shot just missed the mark.

Shortly after that, Penner muscled into the Calgary zone where his attempt went through the legs of Kiprusoff but trickled through the crease.

SHOOTOUT

Ales Hemsky went first for the Oilers. His deke attempt was saved by Kiprusoff. Khabibulin then made a nice glove save on Hagman.

Eberle was up next for Edmonton. Kiprusoff made a great toe save on Eberle. Alex Tanguay then wristed one in behind Khabibulin.

The final shooter was Dustin Penner, who was turned away by Kiprusoff.
