The first two minutes of Saturday's night's game vs. San Jose looked promising for Edmonton, thanks to a pretty shorthanded goal from Jordan Eberle at 1:22. But it was all downhill from there as the Sharks scored six unanswered goals in the following 58 minutes to secure a dominant 6-1 win.
Under the Scope
An early partial breakaway for Sam Gagner initially put the Oilers on the disadvantage when Gagner was called for goaltender interference, but Eberle surprised the Sharks. After battling up the left wing shorthanded, Eberle cut to the net and tapped the puck past Antero Niittymaki to give the Oil a 1-0 lead.
The Oilers held a slim shot lead following the goal, up until Gilbert Brule took a hooking minor at 15:24. One minute and three shots into the infraction, the Sharks struck: With help from Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski, Dany Heatley deflected the puck off Nikolai Khabibulin's right shoulder into the net's far left corner, tying the game at one.
Late coincidental penalties to Brule and Jason Demers couldn't break the stalemate, and the 1-1 game progressed into the second period.
In the first five minutes of the middle frame, big hits on Edmonton's Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid resulted in back-to-back home power-plays. Unfortunately, the Oil struggled on their first man-advantage and saw their second cut short thanks to a slashing minor to Kurtis Foster.
Both teams had some good scoring chances near the midway point of the game, but the next successful opportunity belonged to San Jose. With his fellow Sharks swarming, Logan Couture caught a rebound and backhanded it top-shelf to put the visitors up 2-1 at 12:46.
Tempers flared on the following face-off. Just outside Niittymaki's crease, Zack Stortini and Jamal Mayers got into a scrap. Stortini eventually dragged the duo to the ice, ushering in the linesmen and multiple penalties, including an extra two for instigating and a 10-minute misconduct for Mayers.
In the final minutes of the second, the Oilers went on the penalty kill when Taylor Hall was forced to serve two minutes for tripping. The rookie couldn't complete his sentence, however, as Pavelski, Heatly, and Thornton teamed up for their club's second power-play goal of the night.
As such, the Sharks concluded 40 minutes with a 3-1 lead and 21-13 advantage in shots.
Edmonton battled back and forth with San Jose at the beginning of the third, but the Sharks quickly took over. At 4:29, Ryan Clowe scored a fourth San Jose goal, and 20 seconds later, with Jim Vandermeer in the box for slashing, Dan Boyle made it 5-1 on the power-play. With helpers on the goals, Pavelski and Thornton entered the three-point club.
The Sharks broke 30 shots following the goal and hit six goals following that. To conclude a dominant stretch in the offensive zone, San Jose's John McCarthy flipped the puck over a scrambling Khabibulin to set the score 6-1.
The final buzzer couldn't come soon enough, but when it did, the Oilers saw their three-game losing streak increase to four.
