Oilers drop Battle of Alberta 5-1
Calgary Flames 5, Edmonton Oilers 1

The Oilers kept even with the Flames through 39:43, but a late second-period goal paved the way for a difficult third. Four Edmonton penalties helped Calgary add three goals in the final frame to steal a 5-1 victory in the season's first Battle of Alberta.

Steve MacIntyre inspired the crowd with a vigorous fight and opening goal, while Liam Reddox was named third star for his scrappy second-period brawl and four shots. Like the rest of his teammates, Nikolai Khabibulin had a tough third period and finished with 26 saves on 31 shots.

Under the Scope

FIRST PERIOD

The provincial rivals traded man-advantages in the first five minutes of the game, but Robyn Regehr and Ryan Jones served their full two minutes without consequences on the scoreboard.

At the seven-minute mark, fans were given something to cheer about when MacIntyre and Raitis Ivanans initiated a marathon punch-up in the Flames zone. The fight was fairly even until MacIntyre closed it with a handful of landed jabs, triggering a rousing ovation and fighting majors.

As the frame wound down, James Vandermeer and Jarome Iginla expressed their frustrations in a cross-checking showdown. Four-on-four failed to net the opening goal, however, and the scoreless game stretched into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD

The Oilers started the middle frame by killing a power-play and dropping some gloves. Fights between Reddox and Stefan Meyer, as well as Vandermeer and Tim Jackman, netted five-minute majors all around and game misconducts to the latter two.

After penalties were awarded, tough guys continued to dominate, this time on the scoreboard. Poised in front of Henrik Karlsson, MacIntyre deflected Theo Peckham's point shot into the net to score his first goal since April 10, 2009 (also vs. Calgary) and give the Oil a 1-0 lead.

Edmonton suffered some penalty trouble near the game's midway point, and though the club killed a five-on-three, Calgary struck with Kurtis Foster still in the box. From the right wing, Niklas Hagman snapped the puck past Khabibulin to tie the game at one at 11:31.

With under five minutes on the clock, a scramble in front of the Oilers net caused tempers to flare. Former teammates Zack Stortini and Steve Staios engaged in a shouting match that quickly turned physical. The two threw a few punches and were backed by teammates but were quickly ushered apart. The shouting match continued on their way, adding coincidental roughing minors to the list of infractions.

The clubs seemed destined for another tied intermission, but Iginla had other ideas. While skating up the right wing, the Flames captain skirted Peckham and picked the far corner to give the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD

Following that late goal, the Flames added an early one on the third period's opening face-off. Although Iginla's shot hit the crossbar, fell on the line, and slid away from the net, Ryan Whitney's attempts to clear the puck resulted in sweeping it back behind Khabibulin. The unlucky play put Calgary up 3-1.

The Flames dominated play as the period progressed, but Khabibulin kept his club within two. With 5:31 left in regulation, Reddox had the chance to narrow the gap by battling in on Karlsson, but the young forward got tripped up and flew into the net without the puck.

Jordan Eberle added another great scoring chance in the following minutes, but unfortunately for local fans, the next goals -- and the win -- belonged to Calgary. With their first goals of the pre-season, Jon Rheault and TJ Brodie lifted the Flames to a 5-1 win.
