Tampa Bay scored the first and last goals of the game, but young Oilers dominated the all-important in-between, lifting the Oilers to a 5-2 win Thursday night.
Magnus Paajarvi was the star of the night with three goals and an assist, while Taylor Hall and Andrew Cogliano helped the cause with goals of their own. Devan Dubnyk and Jeff Deslauriers shared goaltending duties, posting 20 and eight saves respectively.

The puck had barely dropped before rough stuff started between former teammates. Only 16 seconds into the game, Ladislav Smid and Marc Pouliot got into a shoving match behind Dubnyk's net. In addition to the roughing minors, Kurtis Foster took an interference minor, but the Lightning failed to register a shot on the opening man-advantage.
Although Tampa Bay couldn't capitalize on the powerplay, they got the job done two minutes later. From the right face-off circle, Randy Jones snapped the puck over Dubnyk's glove to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Oilers attacked following the goal -- led by a fierce shot from Hall -- but Dan Ellis' sturdy post and pad prevented an equalizer.
The home team and visitors alternated penalties as the period progressed, with Steve MacIntyre and Mattias Ohlund settling in as penalty box neighbours at around the 14-minute mark.
29-seconds into the four-on-four, Paajarvi surged up the middle, dodged the defenders, and slipped the puck through Ellis' legs while tumbling to the ice. The highlight-worthy goal evened the game at one.
Three minutes later, Paajarvi helped give Edmonton the lead. With Carter Ashton serving a slashing minor, Paajarvi fed the puck to Foster, who slapped it up the slot to Andrew Cogliano. Perfectly poised at the corner of the net, Cogliano effortlessly tapped it past the sprawled-out Ellis to make it 2-1.
The Oilers closed out the period down a man (Liam Reddox for hooking) but up a goal.
Tampa held the edge in the shot department in the second period, but Edmonton held -- and increased -- its edge on the scoreclock. For the second consecutive time, the Oilers' second line connected on the powerplay, and for the second time in the game, Paajarvi got the puck in the net. Alex Plante also registered his second assist of the night.
With a two-goal lead, the Oilers opted for a goalie change, swapping Deslauriers for Dubnyk.
The new goalie was tasked with resisting two Lightning powerplays, and he came up with two solid stops. At the conclusion of 40 minutes, Edmonton trailed 22 shots to 15 but led 3-1.
A pair of exciting scoring chances at both ends of the ice highlighted the early minutes of the third, but each attempt -- including a partial breakaway by Hall -- was unsuccessful.
Although Hall couldn't complete that play, his first pre-season goal and first goal as an Oiler at Rexall Place wasn't too far away.
Midway through a Tampa Bay team penalty for too many men, Ellis skated out and attemped to clear the puck. But Hall while crossing the blue line, Hall pulled the puck out of mid-air, deked around the goalie, and tapped it into the net to make it 4-1 Oilers.
Hall received a standing ovation for his feat, and two minutes later, Paajarvi made the crowd cheer even louder. Despite being down a man, the Swede star skated up the right wing and fired past Ellis to score shorthanded, secure a hat trick, and register his fourth point of the game.
With four minutes left in regulation, Edmonton was put on the disadvantage when MacIntyre was assessed four minutes for roughing and charging. With a cluster of players crowding Deslauriers, Ashton managed to get the puck across the line, trimming Edmonton's lead.
But that's where the trimming stopped. Despite tallying seven fewer shots through 60 minutes, the Lightning finished three goals short and Edmonton secured a 5-2 win Thursday night.
