The Oilers and Ducks eased themselves into Friday night's match-up at Rexall Place, but by the second period, they were playing full force. 20 penalties totalling 66 minutes were assessed between the clubs, and the Ducks dominated, with Corey Perry scoring two powerplay goals in less than two minutes late in the third.
Although Marc Pouliot narrowed the gap during six-on-three in the final minute, it wasn't enough to force extra time and the Oilers suffered a 3-2 loss. Gilbert Brule scored Edmonton's first goal, while Jeff Deslauriers was solid with 37 saves for third-star honours.
The teams kept pace with eachother through the first five minutes, posting three shots on Curtis McElhinney and Deslauriers respectively. But near the eight-minute mark, a scramble in the Oilers zone resulted in two more visiting shots and a goal.
Although Deslauriers stopped George Parros' initial shot, the tough guy quickly got the puck back, slipped it through a crowd and under the goalie to put Anaheim up 1-0.
Edmonton regained control of the shots following the goal against, but with 5:43 on the clock, Deslauriers hobbled his team's offensive efforts by taking an interference minor. The Oilers rose to the occasion and prevented any scoring opportunities throughout the two minutes.
After 20 minutes, the Ducks continued to lead by one but were even with the Oil at 10 shots.
Anaheim came out swinging in the middle frame, a term Parros and Zack Stortini took to heart less than three minutes in. After snapping at eachother throughout the first, the scrappers civilly dropped their gloves on a face-off and instigated the first fight of the game. The wild affair featured flailing fists and aggressive bear hugs, but it came to an end without much drama and the hairy pair dutifully skated to the penalty boxes together.
The fight seemed to kick-start the Oilers, and Brule led the charge. At the six-minute mark, Brule crossed the blue line and cut to the left wing, where he teed up a slap shot. The puck was perfectly struck and zinged into McElhinney's far top corner, tying the game at one.
The Ducks cracked 20 shots as the period progressed, a feat the Oilers matched with one minute on the clock.
At that time, a third consecutive visiting infraction, this time to Nick Bonino for hooking, ensured the Oilers would start the final frame with 1:34 of powerplay.
Anaheim killed the rest of Bonino's penalty but had little reprieve. With Saku Koivu in the box for slashing, the Oilers swarmed McElhinney, but timely saves and a clutch glove grab by defenceman Sheldon Brookbank prevented a go-ahead goal.
Tempers flared near the midway point of the period. After a hit from Troy Bodie, former Duck Ryan Whitney flew into the visiting bench and got into a short scuffle with his former teammates. The Oilers defenceman took a slashing minor for the altercation.
29 seconds later, Dean Arsene and Ryan earned coincidental roughing minors for a gritty pile-up deep in the Oilers zone. Whitney and Arsene were soon joined by another defenceman, Taylor Chorney, when he took a slashing minor.
Edmonton's depleted blue line was attacked immediately. Only 17 seconds into Chorney's penalty, Corey Perry got the puck under Deslauriers and eventually across the line to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead. 1:35 later and with Chorney still in the box, Perry added another powerplay marker to make it 3-1 Anaheim.
Arsene didn't let up on the tough stuff following the goals, dropping his gloves with Mike Brown at 14:08. The short but furious scrap resulted in fighting majors and 10-minute misconducts to both players.
Trailing by two, the Oilers were gifted an excellent opportunity to even things up when Brendan Mikkelson and Brookbank shared space in the Ducks penalty box in the final minute. With Deslauriers out of his net, the Oilers had a six-on-three powerplay and Marc Pouliot capitalized, getting the Oilers back within one with 20 seconds left in regulation.
Unfortunately for the Oil, the six skaters couldn't beat McElhinney a second time, and the Ducks held on for a 3-2 win Friday night.
