Oilers slay Sharks 5-1
San Jose Sharks 1, Edmonton Oilers 5

Despite being consistently outshot by the dangerous Sharks, the Oilers made their attempts count and, with help from rookie backstopper Devan Dubnyk, secured a dominant 5-1 win Sunday night.

Robert Nilsson, Dustin Penner, Fernando Pisani, Shawn Horcoff, and Aaron Johnson scored for Edmonton, while Dubnyk finished with 27 saves for his second consecutive win.

FIRST PERIOD

The Sharks were slippery early in the game, tallying four shots on Dubnyk before the Oilers could test Evgeni Nabokov with an attempt at the four-minute mark.

Two shots and two minutes later, Zack Stortini and Brad Staubitz collided and dropped their gloves in the Sharks zone. The scrap was light on punches and heavy on jersey-pulling, but the players earned fighting majors anyway and sat out the following five.

Shortly after the next face-off, Joe Pavelski caught the puck and fired on net. Dubnyk didn't make the stop, but his left post did and the scoreless game continued.

While Pavelski couldn't light the lamp, Nilsson made it look easy at 11:10. After spotting the abandoned puck in the neutral zone, Nilsson pinned it and broke in on Nabokov. The flashy forward stickhandled into the crease, put on the breaks, and tapped the puck into the net to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

1:13 later, Penner got the same result in a much less pretty way. Although Nabokov stopped Marc Pouliot's initial slapper, he couldn't corral the rebound and, after a few attempts, Penner prodded it across the line to make it 2-0 heading into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD

Four minutes into the middle frame, a slashing minor to Ryane Clowe gave the Oilers the game's first powerplay, but the home team failed to capitalize on the man-advantage and stayed up by two.

What the Oilers powerplay failed to produce, Pisani accomplished at the game's midway point. Like with Penner's goal, Nabokov ran into rebound trouble and Pisani pounced with a wrister that slid under the goalie's pad to set the score 3-0.

A holding minor to Taylor Chorney soon gave San Jose the chance to get that one back, but Dubnyk and his penalty killers outlasted the two minutes to protect their three-goal cushion.

The Oilers stayed within a few shots of the Sharks as the period wrapped up. A late hooking minor to Johnson put the club back down a man, but the buzzer pushed the majority of the infraction into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD

Edmonton persevered through the remainder of Johnson's penalty and then attained 20 shots as the Sharks hit 26.

Despite trailing on the shot clock, the Oilers continued to out-do the Sharks by making theirs count. With seven minutes left in regulation, Shawn Horcoff, Pisani and Ethan Moreau joined forces for a fourth unanswered goal. After crossing the blue line with the puck, Horcoff fed the puck to Pisani, who passed it over to Moreau, who tapped it back to Horcoff at the opposite side of the crease. Horcoff wrapped the picture-perfect play with his 12th goal of the season and a 4-0 Oilers lead.

Shortly after the goal, Douglas Murray hit Theo Peckham behind Dubnyk's net, crumpling the rookie defenceman to the ice. Peckham skated off the ice but headed directly to the locker room, while Murray headed directly to the penalty box for interference. Oilers head coach Pat Quinn later announced that Peckham seperated his shoulder on the play and will be out indefinitely.

Although Tom Gilbert negated the advantage by adding a tripping minor, fellow defenceman Johnson wasn't fazed. From the left point during four-on-four, Johnson slapped the puck past Nabokov to make it 5-0 Oilers.

But the Sharks soon got that one back. At 16:58, Clowe caught Dan Boyle's rebound and fired past Dubnyk to break their goose-egg.

The teams took a break from goals in favour of punches late in the game, when fights involving Stortini and Murray, as well as Mike Comrie and Scott Nichol, broke out. A brawl at the final buzzer capped the action, but it was too late for the Sharks as the Oilers finished with a dominant 5-1 win.
