The Edmonton Oilers fell to their provincial rivals 6-1 on Hockey Day in Canada Saturday Night. Jarome Iginla scored twice to lead the Flames to the win.
Calgary got on the board first, 3:45 into the game. The Flames' newly-christened top line of Jarome Iginla, Dustin Boyd and Mikael Backlund scored as Boyd was stationed off the left post. Backlund had the puck behind the net where he centered it to Iginla. The Flames captain's shot attempt trickled over to Boyd who backhanded it into the open net.
After the goal, Edmonton went on the attack. They had Calgary pinned deep in their own zone for several minutes, cycling the puck around the zone looking for a scoring opportunity. The Flames were eventually able to get a whistle and put an end to the threat.
Animosity began 10 minutes into the opening period as Shawn Horcoff dropped the gloves with Mark Giordano. The two had a spirited battle in the corner of the Flames zone. On that same play, Dustin Boyd tripped up Tom Gilbert at the Calgary blueline and got the game's first penalty.
On the ensuing power play, Sam Gagner scored to tie the game at 1-1. Patrick O'Sullivan took the puck in the slot and fed it over to Gagner at the left side of the net. Gagner took a nice shot, wiring it top corner behind Kiprusoff.
It only took the Flames 48 seconds to get back in the lead. While on a delayed penalty, Jay Bouwmeester fed Rene Bourque in the slot. Bourque made no mistake, wristing it past Dubnyk for his sixth goal and 12th point in six games against Edmonton.
Backlund took a tripping penalty, upending Jason Strudwick deep in the Oilers zone with 1:30 left in the opening frame to give Edmonton a chance to tie things up heading to the intermission. They were unable to convert but took a 30-second man advantage into the second period.
Shots on goal after one were 10-9 in favour of Edmonton.
Denis Grebeshkov nearly tied the game in the second period, about five minutes into the frame. He took a great pass in the slot and quickly fired it on net. The shot beat Flames netminder Miikka Kiprusoff but rang off the right post behind him.
Several minutes later, Boyd struck for his second of the game. Souray tried to clear the puck out of the corner and passed it right onto the stick of Boyd. Boyd made no mistake, quickly snapping it high past Dubnyk to extend Calgary's lead to 3-1.
Five minutes into the period, Cogliano was completely robbed after making a nice move to split the Calgary defence. His backhand attempt was snagged by Kiprusoff.
Less than a minute later, Jamie Lundmark fed Dion Phaneuf at the top of the right faceoff circle. He one-timed it in to make it a 4-1 game.
Curtis Glencross almost made it a four-goal lead for the Flames when his shot from the slot beat Dubnyk but it rang off the iron.
Calgary received their first man advantage of the night when Andrew Cogliano inexplicably got two minutes for goaltender interference without even touching the goaltender. 19 seconds later, Sheldon Souray got two for roughing to give the Flames a two-man advantage.
With 27 seconds left in Souray's minor, the Flames finally capitalized after sustaining a ton of pressure deep in the Edmonton zone. Iginla picked up a rebound just outside the crease and fired it high on Dubnyk.
Calgary had a 23-19 lead in shots after 40 minutes of play.
A nice three-way passing play by the Oilers early in the third period ended in J-F Jacques attempting a backhand on Kiprusoff in-close. The Flames netminder scooped up the puck to make the save.
3:08 into the final frame, Sheldon Souray and Jarome Iginla dropped the gloves. The two went toe-to-toe, removing their helmets prior to the bout. The fists were flying as the two rivals attempted to settle an old score.
Iginla scored his second of the night midway through the third, poking a loose puck behind Dubnyk following a scramble in front of the Edmonton net.
