Two late first-period goals by the Stars put the Oilers in a tough spot Saturday afternoon, but through the following 40 minutes, the club met the challenge. Defencemen Lubomir Visnovsky and Ladislav Smid employed their slapshots to tie the game, and then Shawn Horcoff and Jeff Deslauriers came up big in the shootout to secure the 3-2 win.
Deslauriers finished the game with 33 saves, while Smid's goal was his first in 152 contests.
The Oilers and Stars tallied one and two shots respectively in the first five minutes of the game. At that point, Ryan Potulny was called for hooking Jamie Benn, but Dallas' two powerplay attempts were turned away by Jeff Deslauriers.
The man-advantage gave the Stars the push they needed to pull away from the Oil on the shot clock, and with four minutes left in the frame, the pressure resulted in a goal. Although Deslauriers stopped Mike Ribeiro's initial attempt, Benn snapped up the rebound and wrapped it into the net to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the goal, the Oilers got the chance to even things up on the powerplay when Fabian Brunnstrom nipped Tom Gilbert's face with his stick, but the visitors couldn't get the puck past solid Marty Turco.
With 49 seconds left on the clock, the Stars got back to full strength and quickly doubled their lead. Brad Richards and Nicklas Grossman set James Neal up for a sneaky wrister that tucked under the cross bar, and Dallas found themselves with a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
Two minutes into the middle frame, the Oilers got that one back. From the right point, blueliner Lubomir Visnovsky fired the puck through traffic and past Turco to get the Oilers on the board and extend his scoring streak to two games.
After being outshot 18-10 in the first period, the Oilers used their second powerplay to gain some ground and hit 19 shots near the midway point of the game.
The Oilers took a bench minor for too many men later in the frame, but the Stars were unable to increase their lead and dropped to 0-for-2 on the powerplay.
A spectacular poke-check by Turco on barrelling Dustin Penner ensured the 2-1 game would extend into the third period.
Edmonton benefited from its third powerplay early in the third period, but the man-advantages continued to misfire and the tying goal stayed off the clock. The Stars hit 30 shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but the Oilers weren't far behind.
With three minutes left in regulation, Edmonton's persistence paid off. In a goal similar to Visnovsky's earlier marker, fellow defenceman Ladislav Smid fired through a screen and into the net to tie the game at two, end his 152-game goal drought, and force extra time.
The Oilers assumed control of the shot clock for the first time during sudden death, but Turco and Deslauriers outlasted the five-minute four-on-four to stretch the game into a shootout.
The Oilers started the shootout right with a big stop from Deslauriers and goal from Patrick O'Sullivan. But then Loui Eriksson evened things up, and it went back-and-fourth through four more rounds until Shawn Horcoff came up to the plate.
The center's shot slipped through Turco's legs, sealing a come-from-behind 3-2 shootout win for the Oil Saturday afternoon.
