Kings topple Oilers 3-1
Los Angeles Kings 3, Edmonton Oilers 1

Although Edmonton's Ryan Potulny tipped in the first goal of the game, L.A. countered with three more -- including the late game-winner by Matt Greene and an empty-netter -- to steal a 3-1 win Wednesday night.

Wayne Simmonds and Alexander Frolov scored the Kings' other two goals, while Jeff Deslauriers stopped 32 other shots in the loss.

FIRST PERIOD

The Oilers posted the first two shots of the game but were soon overtaken by the Kings, who tested but couldn't beat Jeff Deslauriers.

At the midway point of the frame, LA increased their shot lead when Sheldon Souray served a cross-checking minor, but Deslauriers turned away the extra attempts and the scoreless game continued.

With just over two minutes left on the clock, the Oilers set themselves up in the Kings' zone and surrounded goalie Jonathan Quick. Although Souray's intiial slapshot didn't make its' way through, a second rocket off the following face-off was tipped in by Ryan Potulny, giving the Oilers a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD

LA held on to its shot lead through the first five minutes of the second, at which point Jean-Francois Jacques and Sean O'Donnell turned the focus to fisticuffs. The duo clashed in the Oilers' zone and parted amicably after tiring eachother out.

Two minutes after the fight, the Kings translated that energy into a goal. From the left point, Wayne Simmonds fired through a crowd and past Deslauriers to tie the game at one at 6:38.

Following the goal, the Oilers benefited from their first powerplay when Michal Handzus boarded Ales Hemsky. But the man-advantage proved disappointing for two reasons: not only did the team fail to register a shot, they also watched Hemsky leave for the locker room trailed by Head Athletic Therapist Ken Lowe. It was later announced that he would not return to the game due to an upper body injury.

The clubs traded penalties late in the frame, with the Oilers owning the advantage at the buzzer. Randy Jones' high-sticking minor in the final minute ensured the home team would start the final frame with 1:44 of powerplay.

THIRD PERIOD

Quick resisted the Oilers powerplay and stretched the tie game into the final 10 minutes of regulation. Edmonton cracked 20 shots and LA hit 30 as the period continued, but both goaltenders stepped up to keep the score 1-1.

In the final five minutes, former Oiler Matt Greene broke the stalemate. From the right point, the Kings blueliner wired the puck top shelf to put LA up 2-1 with 4:28 left in regulation.

Edmonton opted for six skaters in the final minute, and despite creating a pair of good scoring opportunities, the next goal belonged to King Alexander Frolov, securing a 3-1 win for LA Wednesday night.
