Goals by Gilbert Brule and Sam Gagner helped the Oilers overcome a two-goal deficit and prepare for overtime, but a misplay by goalie Nikolai Khabibulin in the final minute resulted in a late goal for Calgary's David Moss and 4-3 season-opening loss for Edmonton. Dustin Penner scored Edmonton's first goal and finished the game with a team-leading two points.
After an entertaining and elaborate pre-game ceremony (click here for a recap), Edmonton-native Brule took the Oilers' first face-off of the season at center ice. The young center lost that draw, and less than two minutes later, the Flames won another battle where it counts: on the scoreclock.
On a crisp pass from Dustin Boyd behind the net, Calgary's Curtis Glencross backhanded the puck over Khabibulin to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Oilers regrouped and assumed the shot lead following the goal, and the extra pressure around Miikka Kiprusoff's net soon triggered a melee in his crease. The brawl resulted in a double-roughing minor to Flames Captain Jarome Iginla and two-minute roughing penalty to Steve Staios.
Although the Oilers couldn't light the lamp on their five powerplay attempts, seconds after Iginla's additional two minutes expired, Penner caught Patrick O'Sullivan's rebound and forced it past Kiprusoff to tie the game at one.
With nine minutes left in the frame, Zack Stortini took a high-sticking penalty and the Flames benefited from their first powerplay. 1:02 into the man-avantage, Moss tucked the puck inside Khabibulin's right post to renew Calgary's lead.
The Flames stayed up 2-1 but trailed 14-6 on the shot clock after 20 minutes.

Just under three minutes into the second frame, Stortini and Brandon Prust engaged in a fiesty battle before being broken up and sent to their respective penalty boxes.
Two minutes later, Glencross was caught tripping and provided the Oilers with their third powerplay, but despite a valiant effort by the boys in blue, the home team remained down 2-1.
With less than seven minutes on the clock, the Flames broke 10 shots and then enjoyed their second powerplay, courtesy of Staios. 32 seconds into the man-advantage, Nigel Dawes tipped in Dion Phaneuf's slapshot to continue Calgary's perfect powerplay percentage.
On the following face-off, the youngest Oiler dropped his gloves to fight a man nearly twice his age. Unlikely scrapper Gagner, 19, held his own against Craig Conroy, 38, and headed to the penalty box to thunderous applause.
The fight invigorated the Oilers, and Brule converted that energy into a slapshot that fooled Kiprusoff and got his club within one heading into the third period.
The Oilers attained 30 shots midway through the final frame, nearly double the Flames' 16. It took another three minutes for Edmonton to tally number 31, but Gagner made it count. The fan favourite snagged the puck as it bounced off the boards and pulled across the slot before wristing home the game-tying goal.
After the last minute warning, the game seemed to be destined for overtime, however when Khabibulin left his net to play the puck, he missed the disc and watched Moss snap it up and seal a 4-3 win for the Flames.
