Oilers sink Islanders
New York Islanders 2, Edmonton Oilers 3

Although his slapshots garnered applause for breaking two panes of glass early on, Sheldon Souray saved his most impressive shot for the game's dying minutes. With only 2:15 remaining, Souray slipped the puck into the Islanders net to give the Oilers a 3-2 win Wednesday night.

Devan Dubnyk and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers shared Oilers goaltending duties, with both allowing one goal in the contest.

FIRST PERIOD

Five minutes into the contest, Bryan Young smoked Nate Thompson near the Oilers bench, and the Islander sought revenge. Young and Thompson soon dropped their gloves behind Dubnyk's net, earning the first penalties of the game for fighting.

With both players in their respective penalty boxes, Islanders' defenceman Bruno Gervais teed up at the blue line and found the back of the net through traffic to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, rookie Jordan Eberle attempted to tie things up, but his shot rang off Nathan Lawson's right post and bounced back out to Dustin Penner. Penner was unable to sink the bumbling puck and, to the dismay of fans in attendance, the Islanders were able to clear it.

With nine minutes left on the clock, Andrew Cogliano drew a tripping penalty from Tyler Haskins to give the Oilers the first powerplay of the game. A high-sticking minor to Richard Park only 40 seconds later doubled Edmonton's advantage, and the club answered by swarming the New York net. But history repeated itself on the five-on-three, as Ales Hemsy was denied by Lawson's sturdy right post, preserving the visitors' 1-0 lead.

Two late Islanders' penalties helped the Oilers attain a 10-6 shot advantage but the club was unable to sneak one past Lawson. As such, the team headed into the second period up a man and four shots but trailing by a goal.

SECOND PERIOD

Although the Oilers began the second period on the power play, they were unable to tie things up. In fact, minutes after the penalty on Freddy Meyer expired, Liam Reddox was penalized a double minor for highsticking. The Islanders used the extended powerplay to test Dubnyk with four shots, but the Oilers goalie held strong.

Near the game's midway point, Sheldon Souray brought the game to a standstill with a killer slapshot that cracked the glass behind Lawson's net. The Oilers used to the 10-minute break to swap goaltenders, and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers settled into his spot between the pipes.

With eight minutes left in the frame, Steve MacIntyre and Joel Rechlicz duked out their frustrations inside the Isles' zone. MacIntyre thrilled the crowd with a handful of solid jabs before taking his five-minute break in the sin bin.

The excitement continued following the fight when Souray smashed another pane of glass, delaying the game for a second time. When play resumed, Reddox was sent back to the box, this time for hooking. But the Oil killed the two minutes to stay within one at the second period buzzer.

THIRD PERIOD

Eberle was on fire early in the third, completing a handful of slick plays with excellent shots on net. But Lawson had his number and denied the young forward of his chance to tie up the game.

With 12 minutes left in regulation, Penner accomplished what his linemate could not. After receiving a crisp pass from Cogliano, the towering winger surged up the left wing and tucked the puck under the crossbar to even things up at one.

Two minutes later, Sam Gagner put Edmonton ahead. After winding around the net, the young centerman surfaced on Lawson's left and surprised the goalie with a textbook backhand to set the score at 2-1.

But with five minutes on the clock, New York stalled the comeback attempt. Poised in front of Deslaurier's net, Calvin deHaan slipped the puck over the line to tie the game at two.

As he accomplished twice earlier in the game, Souray soon stalled the action -- this time with a go-ahead goal. After fighting to get the puck to the net, the veteran defenceman pounced on a bumbling rebound and snapped it into the net. The goal sealed a 3-2 win for the Oilers.
