Patrick O'Sullivan and Ales Kotalik both scored in the shootout and Dwayne Roloson made 39 saves as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 for the team's third straight victory Friday night.

Dwayne Roloson got the start in goal for the 27th consecutive game tonight for the Oilers. Nikolai Khabibulin started for Chicago.

The Oilers had the game's first power play opportunity when Chicago's Colin Fraser took a tripping penalty. 33 seconds into the man advantage, Edmonton connected to take a 1-0 lead.

Denis Grebeshkov corralled the puck in the high slot and flicked it on net where it was redirected in front by Dustin Penner past Khabibulin for the goal.

Chicago responded four minutes later to put the game back on even terms. Ales Hemsky was stripped of the puck by Andrew Ladd as he was exiting the Oilers zone. Ladd then found Brent Seabrook alone who snapped it past Roloson.

2:19 after the Blackhawks tied the game, Edmonton pulled back in front. Liam Reddox sprung Andrew Cogliano in alone on a breakaway. He made no mistake, rifling a wrister past Khabibulin to make it 2-1.

The Blackhawks first power play came when they had Edmonton pinned deep in their zone for a sustained period of time. Eventually, Grebeshkov took a holding penalty to give Chicago a 5-on-4 edge.

On the ensuing power play, Roloson had to be sharp - particularly in making a glove stop on Patrick Kane - as Chicago poured on the pressure. However, Edmonton's penalty killers were able to hold off the 'Hawks.

Chicago's constant pressure late in the opening period eventually paid off in the game-tying goal. Adam Burish took a feed from Brian Campbell and his rolling shot slipped past Roloson for the 2-2 marker.

Shots on goal after one were 13 to 9 in favour of the host Blackhawks.

Chicago came close to taking the lead early in the second when Dave Bolland's shot from the right circle rang the iron off the corner of the net behind Roloson.

However, it was Edmonton that struck for the first goal of the middle frame. After Ethan Moreau backhanded the puck from the corner of the 'Hawks zone towards the front of the net, Dustin Penner muscled his way to the front of the net and chopped at the puck where a fortunate bounce off the blocker of Khabibulin trickled across the line. After a quick video review, it was ruled a goal - credited to Moreau.

Chicago went back on the attack looking for the equalizer. Martin Havlat barrelled down the left wing side but was outmuscled by Smid as he drove to the net. Roloson was injured on the play during which Sam Gagner also took an interference penalty.

Shots were 10-3 Blackhawks through the midway point of the second period.

The chances eventually paid off for the 'Hawks during a four-on-four situation late in the middle frame. Martin Havlat drove the puck to the net but it was stopped initially by Roloson. Cam Barker then pinched in and hammered the puck five-hole past the Oilers netminder.

As the four-on-four expired, Edmonton had a brief power play and they were able to capitalize. Robert Nilsson had the puck behind his own net where he spotted Gagner at the far blueline. His pass landed right on the tape of the Oilers sophomore, sending him in on a breakaway.

Gagner made no mistake when coming in alone, firing a shot glove side to give the Oilers a 4-3 lead.

Shots after two periods were 31-17 for the host Blackhawks.

Chicago tied the game at 4-4 7:23 into the third period. Seabrook's initial shot from the right point was stopped by Roloson but the rebound went to Havlat in the slot as he wristed it top corner for the equalizer.

Edmonton came back down looking for the go-ahead goal. Midway through the period there was a mad scramble in front of the Chicago net but Horcoff couldn't get a handle on the loose puck enough to put it in.

Jonathan Toews broke in behind the Oilers defence with about seven minutes to go but was hooked from behind by Souray. The result was a penalty shot to the Blackhawks forward.

The Chicago captain elected to try five-hole and shoot from the hash marks but Roloson was up to the task, making the pad save.

With 21 seconds left in the third, Seabrook checked Gilbert into the Oilers net to get an interference penalty.

That man advantage carried over into the extra frame.

Shots on goal after regulation time was 43 to 26 for Chicago.

Edmonton started OT with three forwards - Kotalik, Penner and Hemsky - with Sheldon Souray on the man advantage. They cycled the puck well and pinned Chicago deep in the 'Hawks end for the entire power play but were unable to score.

Jonathan Toews was the first shooter for Chicago and lost control of the puck as he tried to deke. Patrick O'Sullivan then made a quick deke before backhanding the puck top corner.

Patrick Kane also tried to deke and did but Roloson was equal to the task, squeezing the pad against the post. Ales Kotalik then iced the outcome with a low glove side shot.
