Oilers suffer 4-3 OT loss in Montreal
Edmonton Oilers 3, Montréal Canadiens 4

Although the Oilers posted a powerful second-period to hold a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes, two goals by Saku Koivu -- including the powerplay game-winner in overtime -- carried the Canadiens to a 4-3 OT win Tuesday night.

Andrew Cogliano, Sheldon Souray, and Sam Gagner scored for Edmonton, while Dwayne Roloson made 22 saves in the loss. Souray suffered a lower body injury in the second-period and did not finish the game.

FIRST PERIOD

Montreal's Carey Price was faced with two shots before his goaltending counterpart Dwayne Roloson was forced to make a save. Although the Oilers goalie stopped that initial attempt, three shots and three minutes later, he could not prevent Alex Tanguay's redirected rebound from crossing the line.

Soon after the following puck drop, Zack Stortini and Greg Stewart dropped their gloves for the first fight and penalties of the game, but Stortini wouldn't be alone in the penalty box for long as Ladislav Smid earned two minutes for roughing on the following shift. The Habs assumed a 6-3 shot lead on the powerplay but were unable to increase their lead.

A minute after even-strength play resumed, Alex Kovalev gave the Oilers their first powerplay by taking a high-sticking minor. But Price and his penalty killers -- specifically eagle-eyed Josh Gorges -- kept the equalizer off the board.

The Habs held on to their one-goal and one-shot lead through to the end of the first period.

SECOND PERIOD

Edmonton quickly rebounded from their 7-6 shot deficit by dominating the early part of the second period with seven unanswered shots. An eighth shot -- courtesy of Andrew Cogliano -- made it past Price. After dancing past the blue-line, around the Habs defrencemen, and into the face-off circle, the speedy Oiler picked the far top shelf to tie the game at one.

The Oilers were put back on the penalty kill following the equalizer but managed to kill Tom Gilbert's hooking minor without allowing a goal, nevermind a shot. Near the six-minute mark, Sheldon Souray accomplished what the Habs powerplay could not with a quick slapshot that fooled Price to put the Oilers up 2-1.

But the lead would last less than two minutes. Capitalizing on a chaotic Edmonton crease, Glen Metropolit slipped a sharp-angle shot between Roloson's legs to even things up at two.

Two minutes after that, more chaos resulted in another goal -- this time at the other end of the ice. Although Price made a save and thought he fell onto the puck, Sam Gagner spotted it near the post and prodded it into the net. The goal ensured the Oilers would start the third period with a 3-2 lead and commanding 23-9 shot lead.

THIRD PERIOD

Just as the Oilers started strongly in the second, the Habs started strongly in the third. Despite benefiting from their third powerplay early in the frame, Edmonton had tallied only one shot vs. Montreal's six in the first seven minutes.

The Canadiens broke 20 shots in the final eight minutes of regulation, but it would take 22 for the team to get back on even terms. At 15:25, Saku Koivu deflected Andrei Kostitsyn's shot over Roloson's right shoulder to tie the game at three.

With 2:10 left on the clock, Tanguay was guilty of tripping Shawn Horcoff and the Oilers went on their third man-advantage. But Edmonton's powerplay continued to struggle and the 3-3 game progressed to overtime.

OVERTIME

With the Oilers holding a 32-35 shot lead, sudden death swept over the Bell Centre. 50 seconds into four-on-four, Patrick O'Sullivan took a slashing penalty and the Canadiens went on the powerplay for the third time.

Less than a minute into the man-advantage, Koivu struck again. Posed infront of Roloson, the Habs captain tipped in Mathieu Schneider's shot to secure a 4-3 overtime win for his club.
