A total team effort yielded impressive results Wednesday night. Goals by seven different players, multi-point performances from six, and 36 saves from Dwayne Roloson carried the Oilers to a confident 7-2 win over the Canadiens.
To the delight of the many red jerseys in the crowd, the Canadiens came out swinging, firing two shots on Dwayne Roloson before the Oilers could register an attempt. But near the five-minute mark, the Oil caught a spark and ignited, culminating in a partial breakaway for Sam Gagner. Although Gagner couldn't beat Carey Price on that attempt, he drew a slashing penalty from desperate defenceman Ryan O'Byrne to put his club on the powerplay.
A minute into the man-advantage, Gagner got his goal. Edmonton swarmed the Montreal net and kept Price scrambling, and though Robert Nilsson and Andrew Cogliano couldn't bury the puck, Gagner corralled a rebound and lifted it over the goalie to give the Oilers the first lead of the game. WATCH GOAL
Edmonton hit 10 shots with eight minutes left on the clock, but it would take three more attempts over the following three minutes for the club to triple its lead. At 13:31, Zack Stortini caught a piece of Tom Gilbert's shot from the point, and though Price then caught his share of the puck, it wasn't enough to prevent it from tumbling over his shoulder and into the net. 1:10 later, another near-grab resulted in another Oilers goal. After making a save on Ethan Moreau and sliding off to the side of the net, Price went to smother the puck but saw it slip out and go to Cogliano. The speedy forward capitalized on the misplay and put the Oilers up 3-0 with just over five minutes left in the frame. WATCH GOAL
After killing a high-sticking penalty to Ladislav Smid, Edmonton benefited from its second powerplay late in the frame. One minute into Andrei Markov's slashing minor, the Oilers top line joined forces for a fourth unanswered goal. Ales Hemsky fed a cross-ice pass to Shawn Horcoff, a play that drew Price over to his left. Horcoff then got the puck back to Hemsky, who snapped a sharp-angle shot into the open net to put the Oilers up 4-0. WATCH GOAL
On the following face-off, the Habs got back within three. With only 16 seconds left on the clock, Mathieu Dandenault watched Roloson leave his net to play the puck and then struggle to get back into position. From the middle of the face-off circle, Dandenault fired past the goalie to set the score at 4-1 heading into the second period.

Up three goals and two shots to start the middle frame, the Oilers were soon down a man when Stortini was called for high-sticking. The Habs were unable to see the full two minutes of their powerplay, however, as a goaltender interference penalty to Max Pacioretty negated the final 25 seconds.
18 seconds later, Tomas Plekanec plowed Denis Grebeshkov into the boards deep in the Oilers zone. Plekanec earned a tripping penalty for his actions, while Grebeshkov was helped off the ice, favouring his right leg. He would not return to the game. The Oilers managed two shots on the two-man advantage but Price turned away both attempts.
At the game's midway point, a third consecutive Oilers high-sticking penalty -- the second to Smid -- gave the Canadiens their third powerplay. But Montreal struggled on the man-advantage, posted no shots, and watched Kyle Brodziak beat Price on a shorthanded breakaway to put the home team up 5-1. WATCH GOAL
Shortly after both clubs attained 19 shots late in the frame, the Oilers attained half a dozen goals. Although Price stopped a Hemsky shot with his blocker, the rebound went to Dustin Penner in the slot. For the second time in the game, Price was unable to cleanly stop the shot as it bumbled over him and under the cross bar to give the Oilers a five-goal cushion after 40 minutes. WATCH GOAL

A late second-period penalty to Sheldon Souray was soon compounded by a high-sticking double minor to Steve Staios, giving the Canadiens an extended powerplay early in the third. But after firing three shots on Roloson to assume the shot lead, the visitors relinquished the final two minutes and then went on the PK thanks to back-to-back penalties.
18 seconds into Josh Gorges' cross-checking infraction, Edmonton found their third powerplay goal and a 7-1 lead. Gilbert's slapshot soared through traffic, off Liam Reddox's stick, and into the net, resulting in the rookie's fourth goal of the season and Gilbert's third assist of the game. WATCH GOAL Following the goal, all but five Edmonton skaters (Erik Cole, Souray, Smid, Staios, and Grebeshkov) had earned a point.
With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Montreal gave their fans something to cheer about. Although Roloson made his 27th save, Francis Bouillon converted the rebound into his club's second goal of the game.
An Oilers bench minor for too many men helped the Habs reach 38 shots, but Roloson continued his dominance through to the final buzzer, backstopping his club to a commanding 7-2 win Wednesday night.
