It was an afternoon the Oilers would like to forget. Despite posting three third-period goals in a late comeback attempt, the Oilers were unable to overcome the Red Wings' explosive five-goal first period, dropping an 8-3 decision on Saturday. Zack Stortini, Dustin Penner, and Marc Pouliot scored for Edmonton, while Dwayne Roloson took the loss for the club.
Only 42 seconds into the game, a slashing penalty to Roloson put the league's top powerplay unit on display. Although Roloson stopped the home team's first two man-advantage shots, a third attempt -- Brian Rafalski's slapshot from the point -- found the back of the net to put the Wings up 1-0.
90 seconds later, Detroit doubled its lead. After doing all the dirty work by streaking up the wing, Kris Draper hit Brett Lebda with a quick centering pass that Lebda tapped across the line for his club's second of the game.
Unfortunately for the Oilers, the high-flying Wings wasted no time tallying a third goal. Seconds after a face-off to Roloson's right, the puck went out to blueliner Niklas Kronwall. Dan Cleary slipped in on net and tipped in Kronwall's slapshot to put Detroit up 3-0 in eight shots spanning less than six minutes.
At 11:33, Sam Gagner was called for cross-checking and the Wings attempted to go two-for-two on the PP. They succeeded. Although Edmonton's penalty killers resisted 1:28 of the man-advantage, a redirection by Marian Hossa fooled Roloson for a fourth unanswered home goal.
With less than two minutes on the clock, another tip-in -- this time courtesy of Pavel Datsyuk -- lit the lamp for a fifth time, concluding Edmonton's worst single-period performance of the season.
After Roloson allowed five goals on 16 first-period attempts, rookie Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers manned the Oil pipes to start the second. The fresh goalie faced three pucks in his first seven minutes and then spent the next two helping kill Ales Hemsky's holding penalty.
Five-on-five wouldn't last long, however, as Detroit's Darren Helm and Andreas Lilja offered the Oilers consecutive powerplays near the period's midway point. But the four minutes resulted in only two powerplay shots for the Oilers, both of which were turned away by Ty Conklin.
Edmonton killed its fourth penalty in the latter half of the frame and looked to register a scoreless second period, but with only seven seconds left on the clock, Lidstrom slapped the puck past Deslauriers to put Detroit up 6-0 heading into the third period.
An excellent scoring opportunity for Kyle Brodziak highlighted the early part of the final frame, and though Conklin made the save to continue his perfect game, Zack Stortini put an end to that at the four-minute mark. After circling behind the net, the Oilers enforcer wrapped the puck under Conklin to get the Oilers on the board.
Three minutes later, Dustin Penner narrowed the gap again. After Conklin stopped another Stortini shot, the rebound hit Penner's skate, his stick, and then the back of the net for Edmonton's second goal of the game.
With just over eight minutes left in regulation, Marc Pouliot got in on the comeback attempt. Robert Nilsson danced his way up the slot and then wired the puck to Pouliot, who tucked it under Conklin's crossbar to cut Detroit's six-goal lead in half.
But as quick as the Oilers started their comeback, the Wings took it away from them. Two goals by Mikael Samuelsson and Ville Leino in 14 seconds wrapped up an 8-3 win for Detroit Saturday afternoon.
