Although Ales Hemsky got the Oilers within a goal midway through the third period, a game-tying marker remained elusive as Nashville held on for a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon. Dwayne Roloson stopped 27 shots for the Oilers while Pekka Rinne made 32 saves for the win.

The midday match-up started slowly as both clubs tallied two shots in the first five minutes. Although the Oilers reached five shots in the following two minutes, the next best scoring opportunity belonged to the Predators when Dwayne Roloson was drawn far out of his crease and twisted around to watch the puck ping off the post.

Roloson and his goaltending counterpart Pekka Rinne were called upon to make a handful of key saves through the rest of the period, extending the scoreless game into the middle frame.

4:32 into the second period, Edmonton's Marc Pouliot earned a hooking penalty and Nashville enjoyed the game's first powerplay. Although the Predators assumed a 15-13 shot lead on the man-advantage, Roloson resisted the visitors to maintain the scoreless game.

Two minutes later, the powerplay tables tipped in Edmonton's favour when Nashville's Greg Zanon was called for holding. Despite playing up a man, the Oilers struggled to register a shot while the Preds posted two shorthanded attempts.

Nashville's shorthanded success soon translated into an even-strength goal. With the Predators ready to pounce, Roloson played the puck behind his net but saw it go out to J.P. Dumont. Roloson made it back into position and caught a piece of Dumont's shot, but the puck trickled through his legs to give the Predators a 1-0 lead. WATCH DUMONT'S GOAL

Although the Oilers benefited from a second powerplay to finish the period on top of the shot clock 24-23, the club was unable to get one past Rinne and headed into the final frame trailing by a goal.

Lubomir Visnovsky gave the Predators their second powerplay of the game when he was called for hooking four minutes into the third. But the Oilers' penalty killers were up to the task and kept he Preds from doubling their lead on the man-advantage.

Upon the retrn of five-on-five, the Predators continued to press. Although Oilers defencemen came to Roloson's rescue by swiping the puck away from the line twice, the home team couldn't keep Martin Erat from backhanding his club's second goal into the net. WATCH ERAT'S GOAL

But the two-goal lead wouldn't last long. At the opposite end of the ice one minute later, Robert Nilsson wired the puck to Ales Hemsky, who one-timed it over Rinne's shoulder to get the Oilers on the board and back within one. WATCH HEMSKY'S GOAL

With eight minutes left in regulation, Rinne earned a roughing penalty to give the Oilers their third powerplay, but the Oil were unable to make the goalie pay for his actions and continued to trail by one.

Edmonton hit 30 shots vs. Nashville's 29 before pulling Roloson in the game's final 90 seconds. Unfortunately for the home team and their fans, six skaters were unable to score on one of their four final shots and the Predators held on for a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon.
