A third period goal by Brian Lee and two-point performances from Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson lifted the Ottawa Senators over the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 at Rexall Place on Tuesday night. Ethan Moreau and Liam Reddox scored for Edmonton, while Mathieu Garon stopped 22 shots for his eighth loss of the season.
After a 25-minute delay due to lighting problems at Rexall Place, the Oilers and Senators got off to a slow start with one shot each in the first five minutes. At 7:19, a hooking minor to Daniel Alfredsson offered the Oilers the game's first powerplay, but the home team was unable to register a shot on Martin Gerber. Edmonton would not receive another man-advantage during the game.
Less than a minute after the return of five-on-five, Oilers goalie Mathieu Garon made a highlight-worthy stick save by stretching towards the post to rob Jason Spezza. Though the save ignited the crowd, the Sens countered with a second scoring opportunity when Spezza tapped in Alfredsson's crisp pass to give Ottawa a 1-0 lead.
A late slashing penalty to Erik Cole ensured the Senators would start the second period up one shot and with one minute remaining in their powerplay.

Although Edmonton killed Cole's infraction, Ottawa found their second goal four minutes into the middle frame. From the top of the face-off circle, Alfredsson tucked an innocent-looking shot under Garon's cross-bar to put the Sens up 2-1.
At the six-minute mark, the Senators' Nick Foligno plowed Marc Pouliot into the boards, sending the Oilers forward crumbling to the ice and back to the locker room with help from his teammates and trainers. He would not return to the game due to a mild concussion.
A roughing penalty to Zack Stortini soon put the Oilers back on the penalty kill. The Senators eclipsed the home team's seven shots by firing their 16th of the game on the man-advantage, but Garon kept his club within one heading into the final seven minutes of the frame.
Less than a minute later, the Oilers forwards closed the gap. With rookie Liam Reddox crowding the crease, Horcoff fired a sharp-angle shot from behind the goal-line. The puck bounced off Reddox, slid under Gerber and then into the net to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third period.

The Senators hit 24 shots midway through the third period, but it would take 25 to regain their lead. With Sheldon Souray serving a holding minor (and his 900th NHL penalty minute), defenceman Brian Lee wired the puck past Garon to give Ottawa a 3-2 lead at 11:32.
Although the Oilers iced six skaters in the final 90 seconds, the extra attacker failed to result in an equalizer and Edmonton marked their final home game of 2008 with a 3-2 loss.
