Coming off what was arguably their worst game of the season, the Oilers rebounded for their best effort of the year, hammering the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 at Rexall Place. Edmonton now embarks on a two-game California road trip on a high note. Click here to listen to the full game online The Oilers put on the pressure early and as a result drew an early cross-checking penalty with Ducks defenceman Sean O'Donnell being sent off.
A minute into the man advantage, Ales Hemsky's wrister from the slot beat Giguere to put Edmonton on the board 1-0 early.
Seven minutes into the period, Ryan Getzlaf won a battle on the side boards with Tom Gilbert and threw the puck in front of the Oilers net. It deflected into the net off the skate of Joni Pitkanen in front.
With 4:32 to go in the first, Corey Perry upended Raffi Torres as he tried to stickhandle the puck high in the Anaheim zone, putting Edmonton on its third power play of the night.
The Oilers' best chance on the man advantage came on a falling slap shot from the top of the left circle taken by Joni Pitkanen. Ducks netminder J-S Giguere was screened on the play but managed to get his left leg on the puck.
After one period, Edmonton had a healthy edge in shots at 11-6 over Anaheim.
Anaheim carried the play in the opening minutes of the middle frame. Roloson slid across to make a nice pad stop on Todd Bertuzzi after the big winger shot it from the right circle.
Roloson then gloved a screened point shot off the stick of Ducks defenceman Kent Huskins.
Coming back the other way, the Oilers almost took the lead with some hard work in front of the Anaheim net. Stoll and Stortini were both jamming at the puck when Getzlaf cross-checked Stortini into the Ducks goal post. The result was Edmonton's fourth power play of the night.
Roloson came up big again nine minutes into the period when he flashed the leather and made a great glove save on a Corey Perry slap shot to keep the game tied.
The Oilers were pressuring in the Anaheim zone when Shawn Horcoff took an interference penalty 10:57 into the second period, giving the Ducks their first power play of the night.
38 seconds later, Marty Reasoner was sent off for hooking to put Anaheim up two men.
The Ducks peppered six shots on Roloson during the 1:22 two-man power play but Roloson stood his ground and allowed nothing in the way of rebounds.
Shortly after the Reasoner penalty expired, Pitkanen was sent off for cross-checking to put Edmonton down a man once again.
The Oilers penalty killers did a good job once again, limiting Anaheim to no shots this time but Edmonton's penalty parade continued as Stoll was sent off for tugging on Pronger's sweater in the corner of the Ducks zone.
After Stoll came out of the penalty box, he picked up the puck and carried it into the Anaheim zone. He skated deep into the Ducks zone, circled and threw the puck back to Penner at the point. He then teed up a shot that missed the net behind Giguere. But the puck caromed off the end boards and came out to Horcoff at the right circle. Horcoff had a clear shot at the net and roofed it on Giguere to put Edmonton back in the lead at 2-1.
16 seconds later, Reasoner took the puck behind the net and tried a wraparound attempt on Giguere. The puck squirted to Kyle Brodziak at the left side of the net and he jammed it in to send the Oilers to the intermission up by a pair.
Shots after 40 minutes were 21-21.
1:33 into the third period, Andrew Cogliano took a pass at centre ice from Tom Gilbert and was sprung in alone on a breakaway. He elected to shoot blocker side, beating Giguere and moving Edmonton in front 4-1.
After the goal, Giguere was replaced in net by Jonas Hiller.
Six minutes into the period, Steve Staios skated down the wing and fired it top shelf past Hiller to increase the Edmonton lead to 5-1.
With 6:58 to play in the third, Robert Nilsson took a shot on Hiller. The puck went short side and Hiller pinned his pad up against the post in an effort to keep it out. After video review, it was ruled that the puck never crossed the line.
With just over five minutes to go in the period, Shane Hnidy received a two minute penalty for roughing to put Edmonton on the power play. On the ensuing man advantage, Stortini did a good job battling in front of the net and drew another roughing penalty - this time to Travis Moen - giving Edmonton a lengthy two-man advantage.
