Shawn Horcoff scored in the shootout to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-4 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rexall Place on Tuesday night.
Edmonton had a great chance to take the lead early in the game. 2:18 into the opening period, Sam Gagner carried the puck deep into the Canucks zone before dishing it off to a pinching Tom Gilbert. The Oilers defenceman attempted a backhand but Luongo stretched out his glove to make a great save.
On that play, Gagner was tripped up by Vancouver blueliner Lukas Krajicek, drawing the game's first penalty.
17 seconds into the man advantage, Geoff Sanderson found Gilbert pinching deep to the left side of Luongo. He tapped the puck in to make it 1-0 Oilers.
Raffi Torres almost doubled the Edmonton lead at the midway point of the period. He had the puck alone to the right side of Luongo but the Canucks goaltender extended his pad to get a piece of it.
With 5:28 to go in the first, Marty Reasoner scored to increase Edmonton's lead to 2-0. Kyle Brodziak created a turnover in the neutral zone and brought the play back into the Vancouver zone. He centered the puck with Reasoner crashing the net. The puck went in off Alex Edler's skate in front and in past Luongo.
Late in the opening period, Edmonton received their second power play following a goaltender interference call on Brendan Morrison.
On the ensuing power play, Denis Grebeshkov lost control of the puck at the left point due to some bad ice late in the period. Alex Burrows picked up the puck and carried it down ice on a breakaway. He managed to stay in control of the puck as it bounced up and down on the bad ice and deke Mathieu Garon to make it 2-1.
Just when it looked like the Canucks had salvaged the period, the Oilers power play moved back into the Vancouver zone and moved the puck around quickly. Hemsky's shot was blocked but the puck went to Shawn Horcoff who snapped the puck top corner.
Shots on goal after one period were 11-7 in favour of Edmonton.
44 seconds into the second period, the Canucks scored to once again pull to within a goal. Ryan Kesler dropped the puck to Brad Isbister at the right faceoff circle. Isbister wired it past Garon for the goal, closing the gap to 3-2.
Five minutes in, Edmonton was pressing once again on the power play. Dick Tarnstrom was set up at the left circle and had a gaping net but shot it just wide.
Midway through the period, Krajicek tripped up Cogliano as he raced for the puck, getting an interference penalty in the process. A minute later, Mike Weaver was sent off for hooking to give Edmonton a two-man advantage.
Edmonton's best chance came with 20 seconds left in the Weaver penalty. Penner found Gagner in front and his shot was gloved down by Luongo.
With just over five minutes to play in the period, Alex Edler's point shot went off the pad of Garon and trickled in to tie the game up at 3-3.
Shots on goal after two periods were 25-11 for Edmonton.
Edmonton finally took its first penalty of the game 3:28 into the third period when Dick Tarnstrom was sent off for holding.
On the penalty kill, Brodziak was sprung on a two-on-one with Reasoner after Staios sent the puck from behind his own net to the far blueline. Brodziak threw the puck over to Reasoner but he couldn't get a handle on it as it hopped over his stick.
Vancouver went on its second power play when Torres was sent off for roughing. On the ensuing power play, Morrison found Markus Naslund at the right circle and he one-timed it over the shoulder of Garon to give the Canucks their first lead of the night at 4-3.
However, the lead was shortlived. Brad Isbister took a delay-of-game penalty by clearing the puck over the glass. Six seconds into the power play, Horcoff found Penner in front and he shot it low past Luongo.
Edmonton weathered a storm in the latter half of the third after consecutive penalties to Stoll and Torres. The Oilers penalty killers stepped up and killed off the four minutes in penalties.
The Oilers had a chance to win it on a late power play. Edler was sent off for hooking with 2:08 to go.
Shots after regulation were 28-20 for Edmonton.
