The Flames and Oilers played scoreless hockey for the first 32:51 of the game, but two quick second period goals by Matt Lombardi and Owen Nolan were the difference. Andrew Cogliano scored the lone Oilers goal in a 3-1 loss.
"I thought we looked tired to start the game," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "Our undoing tonight was our inability to move the puck through the first two periods."
Calgary got the game's first power play when Kyle Brodziak cleared the puck over the glass from his own zone, resulting in a delay-of-game penalty. On the ensuing power play, Calgary generated some buzz around the Oilers net but couldn't beat Garon.
The Flames carried the play through most of the opening period, outshooting Edmonton 8-2 through the first 14 minutes.
With 6:16 to play in the first, the Oilers went on its first power play of the night when Alex Tanguay tripped up Raffi Torres deep in the Edmonton zone.
Calgary's penalty kill did a good job stifling the Oilers power play as Edmonton didn't even get set up once.
Edmonton managed one more shot through the end of the period but were outshot 8-3 by the Flames through the opening 20 minutes.
Early in the second, Calgary went on the power play but it was the Oilers who had the best chance. Cogliano and Horcoff broke into the Calgary zone. Cogliano dropped it for Horcoff whose shot handcuffed Kiprusoff but the Flames netminder kept it out.
The Flames had some great chances to score in the first half of the second period. Shots by Tanguay and Iginla among others were turned away by Garon as he made a number of saves to keep the game scoreless. At the 11 minute mark he stuck out his blocker to rob Daymond Langkow on a point-blank opportunity.
Edmonton's best chance of the game to score came with about eight minutes left in the second period. Ales Hemsky's initial shot was stopped by Kiprusoff but the rebound went out to Brodziak. With the Flames goaltender down and out, Brodziak had a wide open net but couldn't get a handle on the puck.
The puck was cleared and play went back the other way. Owen Nolan and Matthew Lombardi came back down the ice on a two-on-one. Nolan fed Lombardi with a pass across the crease and he tapped it in past an outstretched Garon for the game's first goal.
Less than three minutes later, Nolan pulled a deke on Garon before backhanding it past the Oilers goaltender, increasing Calgary's lead to 2-0.
After two periods, shots on goal were 20-8 in favour of the Flames.
Calgary came out in the third period looking to put the game away. Garon kept Edmonton in the game with a pair of solid stops during a scramble in front. One of the shots snuck through his pads but Staios cleared it out of harm's way.
On an early third period penalty to Robyn Regehr, Edmonton came close to getting its first goal of the night. Raffi Torres rifled a shot from the high slot that Kiprusoff turned away.
The Oilers showed some signs of life following the man advantage, outshooting the Flames 5-1 over the first 10 minutes of the third. Torres continued his pursuit of a goal, ringing a shot from the left circle off the post.
However, it was Calgary that got the next goal. Tanguay found Craig Conroy at the the top of the crease and his redirection beat Garon through the five hole, extending Calgary's lead to 3-0.
Edmonton attempted to get back in the game as Gagner backhanded a pass over to Cogliano on the rush. The Oilers rookie banked it off Kiprusoff's pads and in, making it a two-goal game once again with just over seven minutes to play.
