Colorado got on the scoreboard early. Jeff Finger's point shot was tipped on its way to the net by Ian Laperriere. It snuck through the five hole of Roloson to make it 1-0.

Edmonton had a power play several minutes later when Andrew Cogliano was hooked by Scott Hannan.

On the ensuing power play, Edmonton's best chance came when Robert Nilsson snuck in behind the Avalanche defence but shot it just wide of th enet.

As soon as the penalty expired, Edmonton scored to tie the game at 1-1. Cogliano deked around Finger before feeding it across the slot to Brodziak. He redirected it into the net for the goal.

Colorado regained the lead with eight minutes left in the first. Andrew Brunette carried the puck behind the net where he threw it in front. Tyler Arnason was right there to bang it in.

34 seconds later, Edmonton tied it up once again. Shawn Horcoff corralled the puck behind the Avalanche net and passed it to a pinching Tom Gilbert. Gilbert wristed it from the right faceoff circle and it was deflected in front by Dick Tarnstrom over the shoulder of Avs starting goaltender Peter Budaj to knot the game up at 2-2.

Shortly after the tying goal, Edmonton went on the power play following an interference penalty on Milan Hejduk.

On that man advantage, Hemsky took a breakout pass from Jarret Stoll and danced in around the Avalanche defence. He weaved around defenceman Kurt Sauer and wristed it in glove side.

After one period, shots on goal were 15-12 for Colorado.

Colorado carried most of the play to start the second period. Shots were 9-1 Avs through the first 10 minutes of the period.

Dwayne Roloson did his part to keep Edmonton in the lead, making a number of solid stops, particularly during an Avalanche power play with Steve Staios serving a penalty for Edmonton.

The Oilers started to take back some momentum later in the period. Kyle Cumiskey was sent off for holding the stick and the Oilers buzzed around the Colorado net in an attempt to double their lead.

Colorado ended up outshooting Edmonton 11-7 in the second period and 27-19 overall through 40 minutes.

Early in the third period, Colorado scored to tie the game at 3-3. Ian Laperriere was stationed in the crease where he reached around Roloson to bat in the puck.

Following the goal, Torres made a nice no-look pass to send Hemsky in on a two-on-one but his shot went wide. On the next shift, Paul Stastny clipped Tom Gilbert which put Edmonton on the power play.

Edmonton had an 11-3 edge in shots through the first 13 minutes of the period.

In the final minute, Edmonton had two chances to get the winning goal. Cogliano raced down the left wing side past a number of Avalanche defenders before cutting across the net but he couldn't get a shot away.

Seconds later, Tarnstrom's screened shot rang off the post after being tipped on its way to the net by Reasoner.

Shots after three periods were 34-32 for Colorado.
