The Edmonton Oilers outshot the Nashville Predators 31-23 but fell 4-1 on the strength of three third period goals from the visitors at Rexall Place on Friday night. Ales Hemsky scored the lone Edmonton goal.
Less than three minutes into the game, Mathieu Roy was blindsided by Nashville's Jordin Tootoo into the boards on a late hit. A stretcher came out but Roy was able to skate off the ice with the assistance of the Oilers training staff.
Dustin Penner broke into the Nashville zone along the left side boards about a minute later and was tripped up just as he cut around the Predators defenceman. As a result, Edmonton received its first power play of the night.
On the ensuing power play, Nashville had a good shorthanded scoring opportunity. Scott Nichol's one-timer attempt on a two-on-one was denied by Mathieu Garon as he slid across for a big save.
Shots on goal after one period were 8-8 and neither team was able to pick up a goal.
Nashville had a couple of great chances early in the second period and converted on one of them. On the first play, Alexander Radulov fed the puck across the slot to Erat for a redirection but Garon made a great save in coming across with the glove.
On that same shift, the Preds had another chance and this time they didn' t miss, scoring to take a 1-0 lead. Erat threw the puck across the Oilers zone to Ville Koistinen who then fed it to David Legwand perched at the right side of the Edmonton net. Legwand deposited the puck in the open cage for the goal.
Later in the period, Edmonton got the goal back to tie it up at 1-1. On a three-on-two, Shawn Horcoff made a great play to draw both defenders towards him before dishing it off to Ales Hemsky breaking down the right wing side. Hemsky had a ton of room and made no mistake, wiring it past Ellis for the goal.
Edmonton started to pour on the pressure to get the go-ahead goal late in the second. Some good puck movement by the Hemsky-Torres-Horcoff line resulted in a tripping penalty to Ryan Suter. On that same play, Ellis had to make a good save on Raffi Torres from in close.
On the ensuing power play, Stoll's blast from the point was kicked away by Ellis. Torres picked up the rebound and had the open net but he was at a tough angle.
Edmonton outshot Nashville 15-4 in the second period and 23-12 overall through 40 minutes.
In the first half of the final frame, the Oilers continued to pepper Ellis with shots. Through the first 10 minutes of the period, shots were 7-2 Edmonton.
Robert Nilsson's end-to-end rush late on an Edmonton power play was the Oilers' best chance to take the lead but his shot went off the side of the net.
Just past the period's midway point, Hemsky broke in on the Nashville net. He deked out Ellis but his attempt went just wide.
Heading back the other way, Dick Tarnstrom swatted the puck off the goal line after Radek Bonk's' shot beat Garon five hole.
Several minutes later, Nashville scored to take a 2-1 lead. Martin Erat found Jason Arnott at the bottom of the left circle and Arnott one-timed it past an outstretched Garon for the goal.
As Edmonton pressed to tie the game up once again, Tom Gilbert pinched in an attempt to keep the puck in the zone but it was knocked out by Radek Bonk. Bonk then chipped the puck around Denis Grebeshkov to break in alone on Garon. He deked out the Oilers netminder, putting the puck in five hole.
NOTES: Mathieu Roy suffered a left shoulder injury early in the first period after being hit by Jordin Tootoo and did not return to the game.
