Edmonton Oilers 3, Anaheim Ducks 2

Andrew Cogliano's goal while shorthanded late in the game propelled the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center on Sunday night.

"We needed this win, having back-to-back games," said Cogliano. "It was something we really needed coming out of here."

Mathieu Garon shone on the night, stopping 30 of 32 shots. In the shootout, he made big saves on both Corey Perry and Chris Kunitz.

"I felt pretty good. I remember facing these guys four or five times in the last couple years in shootouts," Garon noted after the game.

Edmonton needed only two shooters to get the victory. First, Sam Gagner scored in a move similar to the deke he made Thursday against Minnesota. Ales Hemsky then backhanded one in to seal the victory.

Trailing 2-1 late in the game, Edmonton's comeback chances were made that much more difficult when Steve Staios took a penalty with 2:57 to go in the game.

On the penalty kill, the Oilers continued to go on the attack and it paid off with the game-tying goal. Tom Gilbert pinched in as he carried the puck deep into the Edmonton zone. He threw it back to the point to Geoff Sanderson whose shot was tipped in by Andrew Cogliano.

"I think that was a really big goal for the team," said Cogliano. "I went to the front of the net and got a stick on it."

At the end of regulation, shots on goal were 29-21 for Anaheim.

Anaheim had most of the pressure in overtime, particularly Corey Perry in the final minute but Garon continued his solid play.

Edmonton's only overtime shot came with seconds left. Ales Hemsky broke into the zone, spun and shot it. Giguere made a blocker save.

Anaheim had the first power play of the game and almost scored the game's first goal. Sami Pahlsson's shot from the high slot rang off the crossbar behind Garon.

The Oilers didn't score on their first power play of the night - a slashing minor to Petteri Wirtanen - but were able to carry that momentum into the team's first goal of the night.

Anaheim iced the puck near the end of a shift

, setting up a faceoff deep in the Ducks end. Shawn Horcoff won the draw straight to Ales Hemsky who one-timed it over the shoulder of Giguere to make it 1-0.

Anaheim tried to tie it up on a scramble in front several minutes later but Garon sprawled out to make a nice pad save on Andy McDonald.

After one period, shots on goal were 8-5 for Edmonton.

Edmonton had a power play to start the period following a late first period penalty to Samuel Pahlsson. That man advantage was extended when Sean O'Donnell cross-checked Horcoff into the Ducks net.

As the power play continued, Edmonton had a pair of great chances to take a two-goal lead. Cogliano cut across the slot with the puck and was denied by Giguere when he tried to go five hole.

Anaheim tied the game up at the 11:51 mark of period two. Corey Perry battled in the corner to dig the puck away from Marty Reasoner before sending a pass across the crease to Chris Kunitz. The Ducks forward then one-timed it past Garon to make it 1-1.

The Ducks started to pick up some momentum after their tying goal. Travis Moen's shot from the left circle clipped Garon in the shoulder before flying over the net. Anaheim had eight unanswered shots to take the lead in shots on goal at 18-16.

With time ticking down in the second, Garon made what could simply be termed the save of the night. Brad May looked to have the Oilers goaltender at his mercy but when he tried to lift it over him and in, Garon got his glove up to knock it away.

Shots after two were 19-17 for Anaheim.

Following an early third period power play, the line of Penner, Cogliano and Gagner created some great pressure. Gagner almost backhanded the puck in as it bounced in behind Giguere.

7:50 into the period, Corey Perry blasted a one timer at the right circle that beat Garon and gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead. Steve Staios rang the puck around the boards but Andy McDonald picked it up on the side wall before throwing it in front to Perry.
