Andrew Cogliano scored in the third period to spoil Roberto Luongo's shutout bid but the Vancouver Canucks defeated Edmonton 4-1 at Rexall Place on Saturday night.
Fireworks started immediately after the opening faceoff as Zack Stortini dropped the gloves with Jeff Cowan. The two went toe-to-toe for about a minute in a spirited fight.
Some hard forechecking past the midway point of period one led to Edmonton's first power play of the night. Dustin Penner drove towards the net and was impeded by Lukas Krajicek.
The power play didn't score but it did generate enough pressure to draw another penalty.
In the final minute of the first, Brendan Morrison scored to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead. Morrison took the initial shot from the slot which Roloson stopped but he pounced on the rebound.
Shots on goal after one were 9-6 Edmonton.
An early power play resulted in plenty of chances for the Oilers in the second.
Hemsky set up Rob Schremp at the bottom of the right circle and Luongo came across to make a great glove stop in what was Edmonton's best scoring chance in the game to that point.
Luongo made another big stop with his glove several minutes later after Cogliano took a drop pass from Hemsky. He then fired a bullet from the high slot but it was plucked out of the air.
Vancouver had a power play of their own several minutes later and poured on a ton of pressure. For the next two minutes they cycled the puck around the Oilers end and had several great chances. After the penalty expired, the Oilers penalty killers couldn't get off the ice couldn't get the puck out. Eventually, Henrik Sedin found his brother Daniel at the right side of the net and wristed it blocker side to make it a 2-0 game.
Sedin scored his second of the night a couple minutes later on a controversial play. Naslund fell over top of Roloson, taking the Oilers goaltender out of the play. Sedin then fired the shot into the open net.
Shots on goal after two were 16-14 for Edmonton.
Five minutes into the third, Edmonton went down two men for two full minutes after penalties to Souray and Stortini on the same shift. The penalty killers stepped up and killed off the two minutes with Stoll doing most of the forward duties.
Vancouver scored their fourth of the night nearly eight minutes into the period. While the Oilers were making a line change, Naslund fired the puck down ice from his own zone to Taylor Pyatt. He then dished it off to Henrik Sedin who worked the give-and-go with Pyatt for the goal.
Frustration boiled over a minute later when Souray belted Kesler in the Edmonton zone. Byron Ritchie took exception and dropped the gloves with Souray. The two battled in the corner with Souray getting in more punches.
With Joni Pitkanen in the penalty box, Andrew Cogliano scored to break Roberto Luongo's shutout bid. Stoll used his speed to create a partial breakaway through the neutral zone. He was tied up and didn't get much of a shot off but Cogliano came in late and put in the rebound.
Edmonton had some chances on a late power play but couldn't convert.
