EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -The Edmonton Oilers are struggling and hurting - a prime target for a team with designs on a division championship.

Vincent Lecavalier scored twice and the Tampa Bay Lightning snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the floundering Oilers on Wednesday night.

Vaclav Prospal had the other goal for Tampa Bay, which moved into a first-place tie with the Atlanta Thrashers atop the Southeast Division.

"We worked hard to get back to Atlanta and now we are right there," Lecavalier said. "Every game is so important right now. We can't control what they do, we have to control what we do out there. This was an important game after losing the last two."

Lightning forward Brad Richards felt it was important to start moving forward on the Lightning's longest road trip of the season.

"It's a very big win," he said. "We lost our division lead the other night and we wanted to get it back. It's a tough road trip, but we are 2-2 on it now. We have to make sure we don't lose any ground because it is so close now."

Ladislav Smid scored for Edmonton, which has lost five straight overall and four in a row since dealing forward Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders at the NHL trade deadline.

Just as troubling of late for Edmonton has been an almost unbelievable string of injuries.

Already down eight players going into the game, Edmonton lost two more when defensemen Steve Staios (knee) and Jan Hejda (shoulder) left the game and did not return.

"It was another frustrating evening with some of the injuries," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "It's a difficult time. We're totally running out of bodies. We've got Brian Young, who will end up getting called up, but outside of that we may have to look to junior.

"It's unreal. And the timing of it all. It's a weird situation that I haven't seen before."

Oilers captain Jason Smith says the Oilers need some help on the blue line quickly.

"Hopefully, somebody will have some kind of magical healing period," he said. "We need to see a witch doctor or something."

Edmonton had the better quality chances in the scoreless first period, the best coming with seven minutes left when Petr Sykora hit the post on a shot.

Tampa Bay opened the scoring at 10:49 of the second when Richards spotted Prospal in the slot on the power play and Prospal beat Edmonton goalie Jussi Markkanen. The Lightning led 2-0 less than three minutes later as Prospal took the puck behind the Oilers' net and found an open Lecavalier, who scored his 44th goal of the season.

The Oilers broke Lightning goalie Marc Denis' shutout bid with just 2:35 left to play when Smid scored just his second of the season.

Lecavalier rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 39 seconds left.

The Oilers begin a three-game road trip in Anaheim on Friday while the Lightning head to Calgary on Saturday for the fifth game of a season-high six-game road swing.

Notes: Tampa Bay didn't emerge unscathed as defenseman Paul Ranger left with a left knee injury. ... Despite the backlash against the Oilers in the wake of Smyth deal, Wednesday night's game was the 67th consecutive regular-season sellout at Rexall Place.
