EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -Paul Kariya kept setting up his teammates, and the Nashville Predators became the first road team to win in Edmonton this season.

Kariya had three assists in Nashville's 5-3 victory Wednesday night, stopping the Oilers' six-game home winning streak.

Vernon Fiddler, Shea Weber, Ryan Suter, Scottie Upshall and David Legwand scored for the Predators, who have won six consecutive road games and four straight overall.

That's quite a turnaround for a team that opened the season 0-3. Nashville (8-3-1) has won the first three of a five-game road trip.

"When we started off we were doing little things wrong and we started correcting them bit by bit each game," forward Jason Arnott said. "We were able to grind out a few games at the beginning and then start to turn things around. It starts with our goaltenders - they have been playing extremely well. When you have great goaltending it filters its way out."

Chris Mason made 22 saves for the Predators.

Ales Hemsky, Ryan Smyth and Marc-Andre Bergeron had goals for the Oilers (7-5), who failed to set a team record for best home start. The 1985 and 1986 Oilers teams also started 6-0 but couldn't get to seven.

"I don't think the streak meant that much to the team," goalie Dwayne Roloson said. "Accolades are great but all we are worried about is winning games in general and trying to get back to where we were in the playoffs last year and to win our last game of the year."

The Predators jumped in front early. Fiddler tipped Kimmo Timonen's soft shot past Roloson just 1:05 into the game. It was the first time this season that Edmonton didn't score the first goal at home.

"Our record is starting to approach mediocrity," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "We know that and it is important that we come back with a good game."

Weber's power-play goal with 4:07 left in the first made it 2-0.

Hemsky scored on a breakaway in the second but Nashville regained its two-goal lead when Suter's wrist shot beat Roloson 4:49 into the third.

Roloson stopped 27 shots for the Oilers, who pulled within one twice after Suter's goal but couldn't tie it.

With just more than three minutes left, Kariya's shot on a 2-on-1 opportunity kicked out to Upshall, who put his first of the season into a wide-open net to make it 4-2.

Upshall, from Fort McMurray, Alberta, was playing in front of friends and family.

"It was such a great feeling to chip in with that first goal. That's the first one in a long time," he said.

Legwand added an empty-netter in the final seconds.

Notes: With his first-period assist, Kariya hit the 800-point milestone for his career. ... The Oilers' 7-4-0 record in October was their best start since they went 9-4-1 in 2001-02. ... Mason made his third start of the season for the Predators. The Oilers were the only Western Conference team Mason hadn't played.
