EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks changed their fortunes against the Edmonton Oilers.

Daniel Sedin scored twice, including a power-play goal in the first period, and the Canucks stopped a late-season slide with a 4-1 win Tuesday night.

Trevor Linden and Ryan Kesler also scored for Vancouver, which jumped one point past Edmonton into a tie with Anaheim for seventh in the Western Conference. Sedin added an empty-net goal with just over 1 minute left in the first game of a crucial three-game series against Edmonton.

"We got a fresh start here," said Canucks captain Markus Naslund, following the club's first victory in six tries against Edmonton this season. "We're a desperate team and we need the wins."

Raffi Torres scored for the Oilers, who are tied for eighth with the Los Angeles Kings.

"We did a lot of talking, but we didn't do much playing," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "The puck at times looked like a foreign object to us."

Naslund said the Canucks worked through a number of issues Monday during a team meeting one day after a 7-3 home loss to Detroit - Vancouver's sixth in seven games.

"You could see a real sense of urgency on our part," said Alex Auld, who rebounded from that defeat and made 12 saves in third period and 29 for the game. "We had a couple of days to regroup."

Linden, off some great work behind the net from former Oilers player Josh Green, and Sedin during a 4-on-3 power play scored for Vancouver in the 17-shot first period.

"We gave them a lot of momentum early," said Oilers defenseman Chris Pronger. "It's tough to climb out of that hole."

The teams each had two-man advantages in the first period, and Edmonton was called for five of the eight penalties in the frame.

"We got some calls and were able to capitalize," Linden said. "I like the step we took."

Torres beat a sprawling Alex Auld with the first shot of the second period before Kesler batted in Todd Bertuzzi's floater. Oilers forward Ethan Moreau's third penalty of the second period and Edmonton's 10th of the game led to the Canucks' third two-man advantage that lasted 1:41.

"The responsibility falls on the player," Moreau said. "I am going to have to get a lot better next game."

Dwayne Roloson made 28 saves for the Oilers in his seventh straight start.

The Canucks and Oilers meet Thursday and Saturday in Vancouver to complete their eight-game season series.

Notes: Olympic and three-time world moguls champion Jennifer Heil, an Alberta native, was honored before the game. ... Edmonton has three players (Shawn Horcoff, Jarret Stoll, Ales Hemsky) with 60 or more points. ... Oilers forward Radek Dvorak hasn't scored in 12 games.
