Minnesota Wild 2, Edmonton Oilers 2 FINAL OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP)-- Mike York isn't afraid to challenge bigger defenseman in front of the net for the puck.

York scored twice, including the tying goal late in the third period Tuesday night, and the Edmonton Oilers earned a desperate 2-2 tie with the Minnesota Wild.

He banged home a loose puck past Minnesota goaltender Manny Fernandez with 2:17 remaining in regulation.

"York scores all of his goals from two feet out," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "He's a small guy but he goes into traffic."

The 5-foot-10 York also made it 1-all in the first period when he took a pass from Radek Dvorak at the Wild blue line, skated wide on defenseman Brad Bombardir and unleashed a high wrist shot that Fernandez had no chance to stop.

"When you get on a little streak it bounces you're way," York said. "That's the way it goes sometimes. Fortunately, they're going in for me right now."

York, the team's scoring leader with 28 points and one of the only regular offensive contributors during Edmonton's recent slide down the standings, has scored in four consecutive games, one off his career high.

Defensemen Nick Schultz and Willie Mitchell scored for the Wild. Schultz scored late in the second period when his backhander deflected off the stick of Edmonton forward Ethan Moreau and eluded goaltender Tommy Salo. It was his first goal in 65 games.

Mitchell, goal-less in 43 games, had given the Wild a 1-0 lead a few minutes into the opening period. Salo, starting for the fourth straight game, made a great initial save on Wes Walz in front of the net, but the puck went right to Mitchell, who took advantage of a defensive zone breakdown and beat Salo up high.

"On a team that wins, a team that's getting points in the standings, you always get goals from guys that you don't expect," Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said. "The teams that don't, well, they're lower in the standings."

Fernandez was solid with 38 saves, including 17 in the first period and a crucial stop on Eric Brewer from in close in overtime.

"(When) they (Edmonton) play at home, they keep coming, they keep coming," Fernandez said.

Oilers captain Jason Smith left the game following an ankle injury, initially called a strain. He did not return and was taken to a hospital for X-rays.
