San Jose Sharks 2, Edmonton Oilers 1 FINAL

EDMONTON (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks realize there's one reason they beat the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night -- goaltender Vesa Toskala.

"Our goalie stood on his head for the whole game," Sharks center Mike Ricci said. "We can't sugarcoat it -- our goalie won us that hockey game tonight."

Patrick Marleau scored late in the second period, and Toskala stopped 35 shots to lead the Sharks to a 2-1 win over the Oilers.

Toskala's best save came late in the third period when he made an acrobatic arm save on a shot by Raffi Torres to keep ahead by one.

"We have a habit of making goalies look pretty good," Oilers forward Ethan Moreau said. "Positionally, he played well. It was his night."

Toskala also kept the Sharks close during the first period, when they were outshot 15-1.

"At the beginning, I had a couple of good saves, you get into it that way," Toskala said. "There was actually a couple tough ones. I felt really comfortable after those saves and it was easy to keep going."

Marleau scored with 4:03 left in the second for San Jose. Brad Stuart added a power-play goal for the Sharks on their only shot of the first period.

"When you play that poorly and you come out of it 1-1 there's a sense of relief," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "We haven't really dug a hole at all."

Marleau broke a 1-all tie with his eighth of the season. Parked in front of Ty Conklin, he picked the puck out of a scramble in front of the goal and lifted a backhander that hit the Oilers goalie before going in.

Jarrett Stoll scored the lone goal for the Oilers (10-11-3-0), who are winless in five games.

Stoll opened the scoring with 6:37 left in the first, when his shot from the wing hit a crowd in front of the net and got behind Toskala.

Conklin stopped 19 shots in his 11th consecutive start since replacing Tommy Salo, who has finally recovered from his hip injury.
