EDMONTON, AB – It was an entertaining game that started with six goals in the first period and ended in a 5-4 overtime win for the Oilers against the visiting Flyers. With the win, the Oilers have collected points in each of their last four games (2-0-2).

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his 21st goal of the season on the game’s first shot to put the Oilers up 1-0. Jordan Eberle pressured the puck behind the net and threw it out in front. Nugent-Hopkins buried for the early lead just 51 seconds into the game.

“They’re working hard,” Oilers Interim Coach Todd Nelson said of Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins. “They’re competing, they’re battling, they’re getting their noses a bit dirty in the corners and they’re getting rewarded for it. Right now, the two of them are going really well and hopefully that continues.”

Eberle stretched his point streak to a career-high seven games, while Nugent-Hopkins made it five straight himself.

Claude Giroux fired a shot past Ben Scrivens at 4:25 of the first to tie the game. Jakub Voracek recorded the lone assist.

Giroux scored his second of the game at the 12:00 mark of the first, on the power play, to make it 2-1 Flyers. Once again, Voracek had a helper and Wayne Simmonds got the second.

The Flyers took a 3-1 lead at 14:17 of the opening frame when Ryan White scored on a 2-on-1 rush. White dished it to Zac Rinaldo, who gave it right back and White potted his fourth of the season.

Edmonton responded just 1:33 later as Teddy Purcell scored his 10th goal of the season to cut the lead in half. Derek Roy set up his linemate for a one-timer and Purcell connected.

To complete an offensive first period, Edmonton got the equalizer at 19:29 of the frame. Oilers Captain Andrew Ference, playing in his 900th NHL game, sent a shot on net and Matt Hendricks was there on the doorstep to put away the rebound.

“It was definitely an exciting game for the fans,” Eberle said. “I don’t know if it was our best first. We gave them a lot of chances but found a way to score and obviously got one in overtime, so that’s the most important thing.

Eberle made it three-straight Oilers goals when he opened second-period scoring at 1:11, giving Edmonton a 4-3 lead. Benoit Pouliot centred a pass in front for Eberle on a 2-on-1 rush. Eberle went forehand and then flipped a backhand past Ray Emery. Nugent-Hopkins earned the second assist.

Eberle’s 20th of the season gives him five goals and nine assists for 14 points in his last seven games. Pouliot stretched his point streak to five with his helper.

Michael Raffl scored 46 seconds into the third period to tie the game, 4-4. Voracek and Mark Streit earned the assists.

Late in the third, Scrivens stopped Nick Cousins on a breakaway to keep things even. And things stayed even through the remainder of the third, sending the game to overtime.

Nugent-Hopkins put home a rebound in front of Emery at 2:46 of the overtime period to lift the Oilers to victory.

“It was definitely nice to get the overtime winner,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “We haven’t been too successful in extra time this season so anytime you get a chance to bury, you’ve got to capitalize and luckily enough we did tonight.”

Nikita Nikitin and Taylor Hall recorded assists on the game winner.
