EDMONTON, AB - Ryan Getzlaf scored the game-winning goal for Anaheim in the third period as the Ducks took a 2-1 decision at Rexall Place.

Derek Roy was called for hooking just 41 seconds into the game and the Ducks took the lead shortly after. Four seconds into their power play, Francois Beauchemin scored to make it 1-0. Kyle Palmieri and Rickard Rakell recorded the assists.

The second period brought a much better start for the Oilers, as Nail Yakupov fed Teddy Purcell for the game-tying goal just 28 seconds in. Roy picked up the extra assist.

“It was a great goal,” Oilers Interim Coach Todd Nelson said. “Derek did a great job retrieving the puck and found Yak. He made a great pass to Teddy. I thought Yak was excellent tonight. He had a really strong game. He was moving his feet really well, in the first period he drove the net and I think that’s what really got us going. He drove to the net hard and it kind of lifted our bench and then from there we started to play.”

Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens made a big glove save seven minutes into the third period to keep things knotted at one.

The Ducks took the 2-1 lead with 7:13 to play. Ryan Getzlaf scored, assisted by Palmieri. It appeared as though Scrivens made the initial save with his pad but it went in off the skate of Oilers defenceman Justin Schultz.

Andrew Cogliano had a breakaway late in the game but Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom caught up and lifted his stick to prevent a potential goal.

Yakupov had a chance out in front of Gibson with under a minute to play but pulled it wide. Then Yakupov fed Ryan Hamilton backdoor with under 30 seconds left for a potential game-tying tally but he couldn’t connect.

Despite the late push, the Oilers couldn’t close the gap to force overtime and the Ducks pushed their season series record against Edmonton to 3-0-0.

“After the first five or six minutes I thought it was going to be a long night,” Nelson said. “We didn’t manage the puck that well, they got one on the power play and we didn’t settle in until about six or seven minutes into the period. Then once we settled in then we played a strong game the rest of the way. We had some great effort tonight. It was a good bounce back game for our hockey team. It was just one of those things where we had some opportunities we didn’t bury and they were able to get that one in the third period. It was a good game, I thought there was a lot of great effort from the guys and it was a good game to come back with after the game last night.”

The Oilers outshot the Ducks 27-21 for the game.
