RECAP: Wild 4, Oilers 0

EDMONTON, AB – The Oilers managed just 15 shots on net and were blanked by the visiting Minnesota Wild, 4-0.

“We never generated what we wanted to generate, playing against a team that’s good defensively and they’re playing well right now,” Oilers Interim Coach Todd Nelson said. “They made us work for everything that we got and we didn’t get much. I thought that we just didn’t have any jump tonight. It was a tough game for us, moving the puck. We didn’t execute very well with that and I thought our structure was off. If you put all those things together, that’s what happens.”

At 10:18 of the opening frame the Wild jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Justin Fontaine tipped in a point shot from Christian Folin, who was recalled by Minnesota earlier in the day. Zach Parise earned the second assist.

Minnesota increased their lead to 2-0 when Nino Niederreiter cleaned up a rebound in the slot for his 19th goal on the season. Niederreiter’s goal was assisted by Mikko Koivu and Jonas Brodin.

Jordan Schroeder made it 3-0 Wild at 15:50 of the second period. Thomas Vanek had the feed across the face of Ben Scrivens for the goal. Koivu chipped in a helper for his second point of the game. At the time of that score, the Wild were outshooting the Oilers 20-8.

Former Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk stoned Derek Roy point blank early in the third period, keeping the home team off the board.

Nate Prosser took the first penalty of the game, tripping on Jordan Eberle, at 8:05 of the third. A quick score on the power play could have changed the flow of the game, but unfortunately for the Oilers they couldn’t find success against the Minnesota kill.

Parise set up Fontaine in the slot for a 4-0 lead for the Wild at 18:45 of the final frame.

Dubnyk didn’t have much work in net, stopping all 15 of the Oilers shots for the shutout.

“It was a poor performance by all of us tonight,” Oilers forward Matt Hendricks said. “For reasons I’m not really sure, I don’t think we had the energy tonight. No excuse. We had a day off yesterday because we played a good game in our last one at home. We just weren’t executing and we didn’t have the energy to be the team we need to be to compete.”
