Dubnyk stops 35, but Kings blank Oilers 2-0

Ryan Dittrick  - edmontonoilers.com | Monday, 04.02.2012 / 9:22 PM

For the second straight night, Devan Dubnyk stopped 30-plus shots and gave his team a chance to win, but it was Jonathan Quick at the other end who earned the victory on the back of his 10th shutout of the season; Slava Voynov and Dwight King each scored in the third, breaking a 0-0 tie and propelling the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-0 win over the Oilers on Monday night at the Staples Center.

FIRST PERIOD

Just as they'd done in Anaheim, the Oilers got off to a quick start -- not with a goal, mind you, but with a tilt that set the tone. Ben Eager and LA's Jordan Nolan went toe-to-toe, and the Oilers' No. 55 dropped his counterpart with several late rights to earn the decision.

Willie Mitchell was assessed a high-sticking minor, while Eager was also charged with holding on the play, keeping the teams at even strength.

Devan Dubnyk's 32-save outing one night ago carried over in the opening period tonight, as the sophomore netminder made eight great saves before the game was 10 minutes old -- including a point-blank one-timer by Alec Martinez in the slot that was routinely punted to the corner.

Dubnyk's heroics continued in the latter half, as an Anze Kopitar pass connected with Dustin Brown in the slot; the shot was on net (literally), but it struck iron on the goalie's glove-side post to keep the score knotted at zero.

Ales Hemsky has gone to the locker room to nurse his sore shoulder, which was a concern heading into tonight's game. He was able to return later in the contest, however.

Nolan, along with Colin Fraser and Kyle Clifford, dominated the Oilers with a strong fourth line shift as the period wound down. An additional three attempts were rifled on Dubnyk, but all were turned aside.

With 20 minutes in the books, LA led 14-8 in shots in a scoreless game.

SECOND PERIOD

3:30 into the period, a mad, goalmouth scramble had the puck sitting behind Dubnyk on the goal line. The Oilers collapsed back and were able to clear it in time, preserving the 0-0 score and settling the rabid crowd who thought their team had scored.

Dustin Penner was presented with a backhand opportunity at the doorstep moments later, but again, Dubnyk stole the show to keep his team in it.

With 13:43 on the clock, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' slashing penalty awarded the Kings a power-play -- much to the chagrin of Head Coach Tom Renney who, during the ensuing TV timeout, indicated that he was not pleased with the call.

Renney's displeasure was evident moments later, too, as Colten Teubert was shafted on what should have been classified has a terrific defensive play. With Dustin Brown bursting in on a 2-on-1, No. 33 dove and disrupted the play with a beautiful stick check; Brown fell, but it happened after Teubert connected with the puck. As such, he was assessed an erroneous tripping minor.

Shorthanded, it was the Oilers who got the advantage's best opportunities. Shawn Horcoff and Cam Barker orchestrated a pinpoint 2-on-1, but Jonathan Quick got over to make a sliding pad save. The rest of the penalties were successfully killed, adding to the visitors' momentum.

At 14:12, the Kings appeared to make it 1-0 -- but Trevor Lewis' shot didn't cross the goal line until the net came off its moorings; a favourable outcome for the Oilers in a scoreless game.

Once again, with under four minutes to play in the period, Dubnyk came up big. With Kopitar crossing at the crease's lip, No. 40 sprawled out on his side and denied the sniper with a ridiculous, cross-body glove save.

Ales Hemsky was called for a questionable hook at 18:18.

After two periods, the Oilers continued to trail in shots (27-14), but were still in a 0-0 game.

THIRD PERIOD

Hemsky's penalty was killed early on, but at the 34-second mark, the ice was broken. Kopitar centered a pass from behind the net to the far circle; Slava Voynov stepped up and walked into the one-timer, cracking the Oilers' 6'5" wall as Los Angeles took the lead.

Lewis clipped Teubert with a high-stick at 4:00 -- drawing blood -- putting the Oilers on their first power-play of the night, an extended four-minute advantage. The visitors failed to generate a single shot, succumbing to an 0-for-1 success rate.

Late in the game, the Kings made it a 2-0 game. On a 2-on-1 break, Mike Richards passed across to a streaking Dwight King who one-touched it past Dubnyk's right shoulder at 17:28 as Bryan Rodney raced back.

With 1:00 on the clock, the Oilers pulled the goalie for an extra-attacker. But it was to no avail, as Los Angeles shut the door on the visitors to earn a 2-0 win.
