Oilers overthrow Kings with thrilling overtime win

An opening-period goal by Josh Green appeared to be enough through 40 minutes, but the Kings marched back and scored the equalizer 6:22 into the third, sending the game to overtime.

On a power-play, Taylor Hall helped conclude the Oilers' three-game homestand on a high note as he scored the winner at 3:06, propelling his club to a well-earned 2-1 win Sunday night at Rexall Place.

With Eric Belanger missing tonight's game with a minor leg injury, the Oilers' newly concocted fourth line had success in generating turnovers and scoring chances early on. As such, the orange and blue jumped out to a commanding 6-2 advantage in shots by the six-minute mark, but Jonathan Quick turned them all aside.

WIth 10:39 on the clock, Los Angeles' Dustin Brown picked up a hooking minor, sending the Oilers' 21-percent power-play to work to challenge the league's third-best penalty-killing unit. Just as the minor was expiring, Magnus Paajarvi set up Jeff Petry with one-time bomb from the point; en route, Josh Green made contact, tipping the puck past Quick at the doorstep to put the Oilers up 1-0.

Following an ill-advised Colten Teubert turnover at the visitors' blueline, the Kings broke up-ice and sprung Dustin Penner on a breakaway. No. 33 raced back and disprupted the ex-Oiler's chance, but he was assessed a slashing minor on the play.

LA was unable to cash, however, and the Oilers' 1-0 lead carried to the buzzer. Through 20 minutes, the Oilers were also in possession of a 12-6 edge in shots.

The Oilers' 1-for-1 man-advantage was put back onto the ice at 5:13 when Anze Kopitar was charged with holding. As the Kings captain returned to the ice, the Oilers nearly went up 2-0 when a rebound opportunity popped to the near circle; Ryan Jones was there to pounce, but his quick shot was emphatically denied by Quick's rapid post-to-post push.

As the period's 10-minute mark passed, the Oilers had extended to a 16-13 lead in shots, but more weren't able to be converted. The Kings continued to push as well, but Devan Dubnyk stood tall, making several high-quality saves to keep the home side's lead on the board.

With 4:51 on the clock, Quick made another brilliant save to preserve his team's one-goal disadvantage. Following another one-zone turnover (LA's seventh of the game), Ales Hemsky, Taylor Hall and Sam Gagner choreographed a tremendous tic-tac-toe chance, but the netminder desperately dove to deny No. 89 on the doorstep.

With 40 minutes in the books, the Oilers continued to lead 1-0 and were up 24-14 on the shot clock.

Looking to get back on even terms, Los Angeles' power-play was assigned only nine seconds into the period when Ryan O'Marra was charged with slashing. In only allowing a single shot on Dubnyk, the Oilers killed the penalty with ease and nabbed control early in the period.

On the Kings' 16th shot with 13:38 to play, however, the tying marker was scored. Kopitar set up Slava Voynov who hammered a one-timer on goal; through the maze of bodies, the puck was redirected home by Justin Williams who was parked in the slot.

Williams nearly cashed his second when he slalomed around Petry and broke in alone on Dubnyk. His breakaway came up empty when his attempt, earmarked top-corner, sailed high and wide.

Having gone scoreless on two previous chances, the Kings got another power-play opportunity at 16:02 when Ladislav Smid was assessed a questionable tripping minor. Just like the previous advantages, it came up empty and the game progressed to overtime. Edmonton was up 31-21 in shots through regulation time.

With 2:15 to play in the extra period, Justin Williams got on the scoresheet again -- but with a high-sticking minor to send the Oilers to a 4-on-3 power-play. And it didn't take long for the home side to make good. Just 11 seconds into the sequence, the team's captain (who was alone at the doorstep) made a brilliant no-look, behind-the-back pass to Taylor Hall on the other side; No. 4 corralled the puck and slid it into the gaping cage to seal a 2-1 victory.
