Oilers fall 4-3 on three third-period goals

The Oilers scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead, but St. Louis responded with three of their own in the final frame to defeat Edmonton 4-3 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Thursday night.

Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves in the loss, while Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ben Eager scored the goals.

St. Louis had the game's best scoring chance early on as Vladimir Sobotko drove to the net on a partial break. However, Colten Teubert was able to come back and knock the puck away before any damage could be done.

A minute later, Ales Hemsky took a high sticking penalty to put the Blues on the game's first power play. Hemsky collided with David Backes at the right faceoff circle in the Oilers zone and got the shaft of his stick up too high.

A turnover at the Oilers line during the penalty resulted in a two-on-one chance for Eric Belanger and Ryan Jones. Belanger fed the puck over to Jones whose shot was stopped by St. Louis goalie Jaroslav Halak.

With 7:28 to play in the opening period, a skirmish erupted in front of the Oilers net. The result was David Perron getting sent off for roughing and Edmonton's first man advantage of the night.

The Blues were able to kill off the penalty and moments after its expiry, scored the game's first goal. Devan Dubnyk gave the puck away long the side boards to Chris Stewart. The Blues winger then fed it across the slot to Jamie Langenbrunner as Dubnyk tried to race back into position. Langenbrunner then threw it back to Stewart who put it into the yawning cage past a scrambling Oilers netminder.

After one period, shots on goal were 14 to 3 for St. Louis.

Two minutes into the period, Ben Eager took a two-minute penalty for charging after hammering Barrett Jackman while the Blues defenceman was looking the other way.

Halfway through the kill, Shawn Horcoff forced a turnover at the Oilers blueline and created a breakaway. He was denied by Halak on his deke attempt but was hooked just enough by Kevin Shattenkirk to result in a St. Louis penalty and abbreviated Oilers man advantage.

As the penalty neared its end, Horcoff found Eberle perched at the left circle. His shot beat Halak but rang off the right corner of the net where the post meets the crossbar.

On the next shift, the OIlers finally did connect to even the game at 1-1. Taylor Hall wristed it from the point past Halak for the tying marker.

15 seconds later, Ben Eager picked up the puck in the corner and put it on goal. It somehow found its way into the net past a fooled Halak to make it 2-1 for the visiting Oilers.

With 11:12 to play in the period, Roman Polak got two minutes for slashing Taylor Hall. The sophomore winger went down in a considerable amount of pain after Polak two-handed him right in the head.

St. Louis did a good job killing the major, although with 15 seconds to go in the Polak penalty, the Blues got ticketed for a too many men penalty.

20 seconds into that minor, Jordan Eberle was spied by Sam Gagner at the left circle. He ripped a shot that beat Halak blocker side for a 3-1 Edmonton lead.

After being outshot 14 to 3 in the opening frame, the Eberle goal pushed the Oilers ahead of the Blues in shots -- 21 to 20 -- with six minutes to play in the period.

When the second period concluded, the shot count was 24 to 23. Edmonton had 21 shots that period.

17 seconds into the period, St. Louis had a chance to draw within one after Corey Potter took a delay-of-game penalty. Three seconds into that man advantage, Alex Pietrangelo teed one up past Dubnyk for the goal to make it a 3-2 game.

Moments after the goal, Taylor Hall took a roughing penalty and another Blues power play goal evened the game up at 3-3 before the period had hit the two-minute mark.

David Backes redirected a feed from David Perron that just squeeked over the line for the tying marker.

St. Louis regained the lead with 11:01 to play in the third. Matt D'Agostini carried the puck behind the net around to the top of the left faceoff circle where his shot hit the back of the net and bounced out, giving the Blues a 4-3 advantage.

The Oilers pushed for the equalizer late but could not even the score. Final shot count was 37 to 32 for St. Louis.
